Teacher's note November 25, 2013

We have  three school days this week before we celebrate Thanksgiving!  I know we are all excited about the holiday and we will stay busy so the time flies by.

There will not be any spelling or language arts vocabulary words this week.  Our time will be invested into working on our character sketch.  Many of the students are nearly done with their rough draft and are ready to edit.  The final copy will be produced on a computer at home. Homework Monday and Tuesday will be working on their character sketch for thirty minutes.  Depending on the student, they might be writing the rough draft, editing or the final copy.  Don't let the character sketch consume all of the evening - thirty minutes is enough.  The final copy will not be due until next week. At school we will work on understanding homophones, root words, prefixes and suffixes.  Plus, I will continue to read The Last Holiday Concert out loud to the class.

Our math objectives for this week will be learning how to add, subtract and order decimals.  The fraction and decimal test is scheduled to be taken on Wednesday morning. I always appreciate your help monitoring homework and checking for understanding.  We all hope the kids do very well on the fraction and decimal test.

We have had excellent discussions so far in our Family Life lessons. The lessons this week will be communication skills, self confidence, personal safety and then the gender separated lesson on Wednesday afternoon that covers hygiene, puberty and anatomy. The fourth grade teachers always tell the students to ask their mom or dad if they have any questions that were not answered.  Don't be surprised if your son or daughter has a question for you.

We did not have time to build our flashlight last week, but we will this week!  Our switches are ready and the kids are eager.  Ask your son or daughter how they built their flashlight.

I want to express my gratitude for having a class full of wonderful students and supportive parents and grandparents.  Thank you for all you do to make Soleng Tom and our class such a great place to learn!  Enjoy Thanksgiving!

Love,
Mrs. Figueroa
