We had a fantastic Grandparents' Luncheon on Friday! Thank you for your efforts, donations of food and attending. The kids were very excited looking forward to the lunch and returned back to class happy. I also enjoyed visiting with so many of you.
We have great language arts activities planned for this week. The class will be reading an entertaining folk tale titled The Emperor and the Kite. I love the story and the illustrations! We will focus on understanding narrative elements and comparing information sources as first person or third person. We will also be writing a persuasive paragraph on whether or not our school should have school uniforms. To organize the persuasive writing, the kids will be encouraged to use the OREO method. The first sentence should clearly state their opinion. At least three sentences should describe the reasons or evidence to support that opinion and the final sentence should restate in other words the student's opinion. I would appreciate your help editing the paragraph on Wednesday night and checking to see if the paragraph is organized according to OREO.
Currently we are working on two or three step story problems that require the use of multiplication, addition or subtraction. We definitely need to take the story problems one step at a time. Then we start division! The numbers will be very small at first to prove the division concept with drawings. We should know far more about division by the end of the week.
I am excited about an art activity planned for Thursday afternoon. Claire's mom has agreed to lead the class through an art project. The kids will be thrilled! Keep an eye on the halls to see the art work!
It is hard to believe we are coming to the end of first quarter in two weeks. To get a sample of how the students understand the concepts, we will be taking math and language arts benchmark tests this week. Both tests will be taken on a computer in our lab. The results will be valuable information for me to know what topics need to be taught or retaught.

Teacher's note September 21, 2015
Thank you for attending parent teacher conferences last week. I certainly enjoyed sharing information about your son or daughter and how we can all work together to ensure their success.
The students have earned fifty class points and voted to have a technology day. Mr. Dotson granted us permission. The plan is to have technology day this Wednesday, September 23. In Monday's Dragon Folder will be a technology day permission form. The students need your permission to bring an electronic device to school on Wednesday. My classroom computers will be available for the students that do not bring a device. I will be diligent in keeping the electronic devices safe in the classroom and the students should not use the devices on the playground or bus. I plan on allowing the kids to use the devices 1 -2 hours depending on their behavior.
Language arts will be exciting this week as we read the play The Baker's Neighbor, the Achilles' Heel myth, write a friendly letter and work on understanding cause and effect relationships. We will return to our routine with vocabulary and spelling words.
The kids will know how to multiple a four digit number by a one digit number this week. They will be shown four different methods to calculate the multiplication. They will do disk and place value drawings, partial product, array and algorithm strategies. The first three strategies listed will help the students understand why the algorithm works. I absolutely want the students to be efficient with the algorithm. Thank you for your continued support reviewing the daily homework with your son or daughter.
Friday is Soleng Tom's Grandparents Luncheon - one of our favorite days of the year! The kids absolutely love eating lunch with their grandparent or family member. I'm sure they will be excited! I can be a substitute grandma if a child wishes.
We have two exciting science investigations planned for this week. Ask the kids to tell you about them on Tuesday and Thursday.

Teacher's note September 14, 2015
I am really looking forward to visiting with each of you at parent teacher conferences this week. We will let the student talk first and hear their perspective on how they are doing. I have appointments before school and so I will not be available to assist kids with work. On Wednesday through Friday the children will be dismissed at 11:40. Please discuss after school care, transportation method and whether or not to buy a school lunch so the children know exactly what to do. Thank you!
The topic of planners came up twice on Friday. Planners should go home every day Monday through Thursday for the kids to know what homework should be completed that evening. Parents, please sign or initial the bottom of the planner each day. We have been writing in our planners daily, but apparently some of the planners are not going home. I will discuss planners with the class on Monday.
We will not be reading a story from our anthology this week because of the conference schedule. That means we will not have vocabulary or spelling words. Our language arts time will be invested in writing and reading myths and our science informational text. It will be a great variety of language arts activities this week. I would appreciate your help editing on Monday night.
We took the math module one end of the unit assessment on Wednesday. The graded tests were returned to the students on Thursday for all of us to see how well we understood the concepts. Some of the students wanted to take their test home that night to show mom and dad. The other students wanted the test to be put in the Dragon Folder on Monday. Either way, you should know by Monday evening how well your son or daughter understood the first math unit. I do allow students who do not understand the concepts yet to try again. You are welcome to review the test with your son or daughter. I will definitely be working with students on topics they have not mastered. Now we will be working on multiplication and division strategies for the next eight weeks or so. It would be a fantastic time to review those multiplication facts!

Teacher's Note September 7, 2015
I hope each family has an enjoyable Labor Day weekend! There will not be school on Monday.
Wednesday is picture day for Soleng Tom! Everyone will have their picture taken for the yearbook and those who wish may purchase pictures. The kids always look so cute/handsome on picture day!
Tuesday I will be in Los Angeles attending a funeral of an uncle. Our family will be celebrating the many wonderful accomplishments in his ninety years of life. I will be back on Wednesday.
We have come to the end of the first math module. The kids were given a study guide on Friday to help them prepare for the end of the unit assessment. Please review the study guide with your son or daughter Tuesday evening so the concepts are fresh in their memory on Wednesday morning. The next module is multiplication and division.
Parent teacher conferences are rapidly approaching. September 16 - 18 will be early dismissal days so we have the afternoons to meet. Many of you signed up for conferences at Curriculum Night and I will send you a reminder note. A list of my available times will be sent in the Dragon Folder on Tuesday to those who do not already have an appointment. Please mark your first, second and third choice - one of the times will likely work for all of us. I absolutely want the child at the conference. Please select a time the student can attend too. I am looking forward to spending time with each student's family.
