I just finished cleaning and packing up the room for the summer - it is just not the same with out the kids. I wanted to express my gratitude and well wishes to you one more time. I loved the end of the year gift! It was a huge, beautiful plant with gift cards and poetry attached. It was perfect! Thank you for your generosity and support all year long.

Teacher's note May 18, 2015
We had a terrific field trip to the University of Arizona last Friday. The cloud cover and cool breeze made our walking around campus far more comfortable. We had fantastic adult support for the field trip with thirteen adults accompanying our class. I appreciate their assistance providing transportation, supervision and money to pay for the parking. Hopefully, the kids know more about the U of A and consider higher education possibilities.
Wow! We are down to the last week of this school year - it went fast! We will not have any more homework this week, but some students may want to write more poetry. Can you believe they are begging me for more time to write poems?
Many exciting activities are planned for the next four days. Monday is Poetry and Pastries, the kids will read their poems to friends and then enjoy a little treat! Tuesday we have our final Strive for Excellence Assembly at 9:15 and then we watch the 5th grade promotion rehearsal. Wednesday our class will have a Technology Day to spend our class points that the kids earned fourth quarter. A parent permission form will be sent in the Dragon Folder on Monday. Thursday morning we will attend the yearbook signing activity in the cafeteria. I definitely want the end of the school year to be pleasant and educational. We will continue to do math, language arts and Spanish lessons.
Monday I will be sending home the remainder of the math workbook pages. Either we did a photocopy of the page or did not do the page. Instead of just recycling the book, I would like the students to refresh their memories during the summer of some of the math concepts we covered this year.
I am pleased that all of the All Stars will be promoted to the next grade! Each progress report will be sent home with the students on Thursday. You can email me if you have any questions.
The 3/4 combination class has been a great learning experience for me this year. I now know far more about the third grade curriculum and how to maintain multiple activities simultaneously. I appreciate your patience and support through out the year. Your children have endeared themselves to me. I sincerely send my love and best wishes to each student and their family.

Teacher's Note May 11, 2015
My sincere thanks to all of you that make Soleng Tom such a wonderful working environment. Last week was Teacher Appreciation week and our campus felt like Disneyland - the happiest place on earth. I have appreciated your support all year long in the academics and behavior of your child. Hopefully your received the individual thank you notes in the Dragon Folder for the gifts that I knew about.
We are excited about our field trip to the University of Arizona on Friday morning. Volunteers, please come to my room at 8:30. We will take care of attendance, make car assignments and start our adventures! Everyone on the field trip should make sure they wear comfortable walking clothes and shoes. Most of the students will be bringing a lunch from home and everyone needs to bring water. We have been blessed with more than enough drivers. We need to pay for parking in the garage and so I asked that each student bring in one dollar to help pay for parking. We plan on eating our lunch about 12:00 and leaving the U. of A. about 1:00 to return to school. We should be back around 1:30 to 1:45.
We are very involved in working on our poetry which will be due this Friday. The language arts homework on Wednesday and Thursday will be working on the poetry book. Some students are near completion and others have a great deal of work to complete by Friday. I really want the students to put their best effort into this project and produce a poetry book they are proud of. Monday morning my class will meet with Mrs. Evan's and Mrs. Carlson's class to share our poetry and then eat pastries - we call it Poetry and Pastries! Please ask your son or daughter how they are doing on the poetry project.
It is time to return the math handbook that was distributed at parent teacher conferences at the beginning of the school year. It was a parent choice whether or not to check out the handbook. I will remind the students who have a book to return it. This would be a great time to return any book that belongs to the school.
Please accept my apology for the late Teacher's Note - life has been busy.

Teacher's note May 4, 2015
I was extremely pleased with the book reports and state floats that were shared last week. The variety of book reports were amazing. We had Power Point presentations, created games, flip charts, written reports, and posters. Every book report was handed in on time! The state floats came out great! You must see the third grade floats on display in front of the library! I was thrilled to see the kids so proud of themselves and their completed project.
This going to be another exciting week! Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:30 will be the Family Barbecue. The third and fourth graders will both participate in a concert Tuesday evening in the cafeteria. I believe the concert starts at 5:30 with the third graders playing their recorders. Don't be late - it will be a very quick concert! The third graders exit and the fourth graders take the stage for their boom whacker concert. I think the entire concert will be excellent and a chance for the kids to showcase what they have learned in music this year.
Wednesday is Career Day at Soleng Tom! Mrs. Damek has arranged for different experts to describe their job to the students. Each class will see three presentations to sample a variety of careers. I'm sure the children will be encouraged to get the education necessary for each career.
Also on Wednesday, our class will participate in the Too Good To Throw Away presentation. It is an excellent hands on lesson that teaches the students how and what to recycle in Tucson. Hopefully, the kids will learn more about reduce, reuse and recycle.
Thank you for the fabulous response to our field trip to the University of Arizona on May 15. We have ample drivers/chaperones and I appreciate your assistance. All drivers will need to send me a copy of their current proof of insurance card and driver's license. I will check the notebook in the office to see what is already filed. Thanks again for your support.
We will be working on our curriculum the majority of the time this week. The third grade will read Rocking and Rolling, informational text about the changing earth. Fourth grade will read Fly Traps, informational text about carnivorous plants. Both selections are very interesting and informative.
Third grade will finish up three dimensional geometry and then focus on multiplication. We will review facts, fact families and then introduce two digit times one digit multiplication. I will model the array method and algorithm. The array strategy helps the students understand why the algorithm works.
The fourth graders will continue to study graphs that show change and writing equations for constant change. It is a great opportunity to use algebra and show the relationship with graphs.
I hope to see all of you at the Family Barbeque on Tuesday!
