Hopefully we all enjoyed Thanksgiving, the four day weekend and time with our family and friends - I did! It will be back to the school routine on Monday.
Our reading selection is an excerpt from a classic book, The Cricket in Times Square. I think it is an entertaining plot. The skills we will study this week are drawing conclusions and using the apostrophe correctly to show ownership. The kids will continue to work on their biography project which is due on December 11.
We have studied converting meters, centimeters, kilograms, grams and next we learn about milliliters and liters. The kids will know how to convert the units and add or subtract them. We will spend a couple of days solving multi step story problems involving metric units. Thursday will be a module review and Friday the kids take the module test. Please review the study guide with your son or daughter on Thursday evening. Thanks! We also take the 12s multiplication timed test on Thursday.
Science should be exciting as we learn about series and parallel circuits. The kids will have an opportunity to build a switch on a circuit and see how switches work. The electricity unit keeps getting more fun as the unit progress!
I am looking forward to Thursday afternoon when Mrs. Dugan will lead our class in a special art project. We love art!

Teacher's Note November 23, 2015
I was very pleased with the results of the multiplication and division test last week. Some of the kids wanted to take their test home on Friday to show you. The rest of the tests will be handed out in Monday's Dragon Folder for you to see. We will occasionally review multiplication and division so we don't forget the strategies we have learned. Plus we will continue to master our multiplication facts. We will take the 11s test on Wednesday. This week we start studying converting metric units.
We are going to start a biography book project on Monday. The kids should have selected a book and I will hand out the directions for the timeline. I will ask the kids to keep the directions in their red folder for reference at home or school. We will take the project one paragraph at a time - please do not try to complete the whole project in one or two nights. The biography timeline will be due on December 11.
I will place the results of your child's AZ Merit testing from last Spring in Monday's Dragon Folder. The results give you information regarding reading, writing and math. If you have questions or concerns please contact me.
We have three lessons left to complete the Family Life curriculum. This week we discuss self confidence, personal safety, puberty and anatomy. Wednesday afternoon we separate the boys and girls to discuss puberty and anatomy. Mrs. Damek and I will teach the boys while Mrs. Carlson and Mrs. Evans instruct the girls. The students who do not have permission to participate will be sent to another room. Your son or daughter may have a question for you on Wednesday afternoon.

Teacher's Note November 16, 2015
We have a full week of learning opportunities planned for this week! In language arts we will read an excerpt from Stealing Home. We have eight vocabulary words with that selection and we will study special plural words in spelling. Our focus this week is the skill of comparing and contrasting. Wednesday we will complete a venn diagram together in class comparing literature and informational text. The students will use the venn diagram to write a paper comparing the two types of writing. Wednesday's homework is completing the compare and contrast paper.
The kids learned a variety of strategies for two digit times two digit multiplication. Friday we started working on the algorithm and why it works. Monday and Tuesday we will continue to work on the multiplication algorithm. Wednesday will be a review for the module assessment that is scheduled for Thursday. Please review the study guide with your son or daughter on Wednesday night. We continue to work on studying or multiplication facts. The 9s test will be on Wednesday and 10s on Friday. Thank you for encouraging and helping the kids learn those multiplication facts.
Science will be fun this week! The kids will build a circuit tester to determine if an object is an insulator or conductor. They will also build a filament that lights! Both of these investigations are very high interest!
The Family Life lessons start this week. We will cover My Family, Changes in Family, Decision Making and Communicating Effectively in this week's lessons and discussions. I hope the students gain an even better appreciation for their family.

Teacher's Note November 9, 2015
This will be a very unusual week with Veteran's Day off on Wednesday. We will have school on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday this week. I hope each of us ponder the many freedoms and opportunities our country offers us and the many veterans who served our great nation.
We just started our electricity unit! We plan on conducting three investigations this week: a closer look at circuits, how does a light bulb work and how to light a full size bulb. I think the class will enjoy the experiments! Each student gets to build circuits with a wire, battery and bulb - it is way more fun when each person conducts the experiment themselves.
In language arts we will read an excerpt from the novel Sarah Plain and Tall. The skills that I will focus on this week is understanding informational text features and homophones. We will also have vocabulary and spelling words as usual.
This week we learn how to do double digit times double digit multiplication. Monday we start with place value disks to help us understand the concept. Please do not stress over Monday's homework. Tuesday I will demonstrate the area model, Thursday we learn the partial product and Friday the algorithm. I am predicting the kids will have a solid understanding of why the algorithm works by seeing the different strategies. We will spend more time on the algorithm to make sure it is mastered.
We continue to work on mastering our multiplication facts. This week we will take the two minute timed tests on the 7s and 8s. We voted to take one test a day so the kids can focus on one set of facts per test. Thursday we will take the 7s and Friday the 8s. Please invest time into helping your son or daughter master their multiplication facts.

Teacher's note November 2, 2015
The Fall Festival was absolutely fabulous! Our PTSA really excelled in organizing and producing an extremely fun event for all of us to enjoy! The kids looked super cute in their costumes and they seemed to be having a blast! My family and I certainly enjoyed the event. Thanks to all who worked on the Fall Festival and who attended! Did you see our Medusa pumpkin? Thank you to Mrs. Martin, Aiden's mom, for guiding the students through the process of decorating our pumpkin - it looked great!
The kids started presenting their Greek god or goddess report last Friday and I hope everyone has an opportunity to present on Monday. I have been pleased with the written reports and the confidence of the students while presenting. Their work will be on display in the hall outside of our door - please stop by to take a look.
This week we will read a selection about saving orphan orangutans. We will continue to work on writing a summary of informational test and understanding informational text structure. Wednesday the students will write a summary of How to Babysit an Orangutan. If they do not finish in class, it will become homework.
We will be working on long division to the thousands and then work on division story problems. I will ask the kids to write or draw what the numbers mean in order to understand how to solve the problem and what the answer means.
We have been working on memorizing our multiplication facts. The kids are expected to answer 50 question in two minutes. The kids need to spend time studying their facts. This week we are working on our fives and sixes. The ice cream treat at the end of the quarter is meant to motivate the kids to memorize the multiplication facts and have a little fun.
Thursday afternoon we have an opportunity to do a Fall art project with Mrs. Dugan. I'm sure the class will love the project and I certainly appreciate Mrs. Dugan's time and expertise.
I hope we all have a wonderful week full of learning opportunities.
