We have an excellent week full of learning opportunities planned! I am excited about the art docent from De Grazia Gallery in the Sun coming to Soleng Tom on Tuesday to teach both a history lesson and an art lesson! We should be more prepared to appreciate De Grazia's talents and contributions when we visit the museum on Wednesday.
Our class was blessed with plenty of parents who were willing to drive. Everyone is welcome to attend if they really wish. I will finalize the list of who is driving on Monday. Those of you who have already returned your driving form, proof of insurance and drivers license should count on driving. I will contact everyone who volunteered and confirm whether or not you will be driving. Drivers, please be at our room by 9:00 Wednesday morning.
We should gain a better understanding of the math terms prime, composite, factor and multiple as we continue our multiplication and division unit. Then we will divide a three digit number by a one digit number. Hopefully we will be efficient dividing three digit numbers by Friday afternoon. We will be taking the 6s timed multiplication test on Thursday. Please encourage your son or daughter to memorize their sixes!
Last week we went to the library to check out a historical fiction book for their next book project. The kids should be reading their historical fiction now and in a couple of weeks I will give directions for the project. We will not be racing through the task.
I love the reading selection this week titled Night of the Pufflings. I could only imagine the thrill of saving the pufflings. As we read the selection we will continue to work on determining main idea and summarizing the important details. Last week it became obvious we need more practice selecting the main idea and finding evidence to support the main idea. We will work on that skill.
Science is about to get fun! We will add more tools to our electricity kit and build a variety of circuits. I predict the kids will love the investigations.

Teacher's Note October 24, 2016
It was great to see so many of you at the Fall Festival - the kids looked really cute in their costumes! Our PTSA definitely did an outstanding job organizing a wide variety of fun activities for all of us to enjoy! Thank you to everyone who helped in any way or attended.
Wow! What an excellent response to our field trip to De Grazia Art Museum. We have double the amount of drivers than we need. If providing transportation puts a hardship on you, you may wait until the next field trip to Saguaro National Park. If you really had your heart set on attending the field trip, we do not have to limit the number of people who attend. I will be discussing the field trip with the students and sending home the paperwork for those parents who would like to drive.
Our class has earned 50 class points and voted to have a technology day. Mr. Dotson has given us permission to bring electronic devices to school on that day. You will see a permission form in the Dragon Folder on Monday. Students that do not have permission to bring electronic devices from home may use a school computer. I will let the students use their electronics for 1 - 2 hours depending on how well the students are focused.
We will continue to work on division this week. On Thursday the kids will learn about prime and composite numbers. Wednesday we will take the fives timed multiplication test. Please review the fives with your son or daughter to make sure they have their facts memorized. Knowing facts makes division much easier.
I was very pleased with the maps and instructions from Soleng Tom to home that the kids produced. The class seemed very excited about the assignment and did a great job. They were eager to share the maps and directions with the class.
This class is extremely interested in electricity! Based on watching the excitement of lighting a bulb, they are going to totally love the other investigations.

Teacher's Note October 17, 2016
I hope everyone had an enjoyable Fall Break. I certainly appreciated the time with my family and a chance to relax.
The first quarter progress reports and Dragon Folders will be going home on Tuesday. Please return the signed envelop on Wednesday. Contact me if you have a question about any portion of the progress report. I will be happy to discuss it with you.
It is time for division! This week we will learn how to use an array, area model, place value disks and the algorithm to solve division problems. The first three strategies mentioned will help the kids understand why the algorithm works. I want my All Stars to become extremely efficient with the algorithm and understand the concepts.
Second quarter our language arts focus is on informational text both in reading and writing. We will be reading a wide variety of nonfiction and working on strategies that will help us comprehend the text. The kids will be writing summaries and instructions. Our assignment on Wednesday will be to write the driving directions from Soleng Tom to the their home using sequence words.
Our first field trip of the year will be DeGrazia Art Museum on Wednesday, November 2. The information and forms will be in the Dragon Folder. I would really appreciate your help transporting students on the field trip. Please complete the permission form and indicate if you can be a chaperone. Thanks!
This quarter we study electricity and magnets in science! We will start with a discussion on safety to establish a respect of electricity. It is an exciting unit because it is very hands on. The kids will build a variety of circuits, switches, a filament and a flashlight. I predict the class will love learning about electricity and magnets.
Saturday is the Soleng Tom Fall Festival - you definitely do not want to miss it! I plan on being there to hand out candy and participate in the fun. I certainly hope you can attend too!
Let's all set a goal to make second quarter full of wonderful learning experiences!

Teacher's Note Week of October 3, 2016
Wow! It is hard to believe we are already at the last week of the first quarter - that went fast. The students will not have school this Friday and all of next week. I hope everyone has a very enjoyable Fall Break and is ready to study again on October 17th.
I was very pleased with the biography time lines that were due last Friday. The time lines looked great and the kids seemed very confident presenting. We did not have any tears! Plus, we learned about a wide variety of people.
Monday morning we send our crayfish and structures of life science kit back to the science resource center. If your son or daughter has been doing their own investigations at home taking care of plants or animals, please have them write a paragraph or take pictures to provide evidence of their investigations. We do have a few activities to complete before we start our electricity unit. I believe the kids are going to love studying electricity too!
We will not have vocabulary or spelling words this week because we will not be reading a selection from our anthology. We are going to read the novel Because of Winn Dixie. I think it is the perfect book to wrap up the theme Everyone Has A Story To Tell. The kids will be working on their cursive and finishing up our study of Greek myths.
Monday you will have a letter in the Dragon Folder describing the fourth grade multiplication memorization and ice cream celebration. We will begin taking timed multiplication tests this week and the project will last all of second quarter. Our celebration will be at the end of the quarter. Please read the letter for more information.
