We have arrived at the final week of this semester. Friday is a teacher grading and the kids will begin their Winter Break. I know we are all looking forward to Christmas and the holidays with our family, but we still have to work this week. I will try to incorporate at little fun into the next four school days.
Monday we will enjoy another art lesson and activity with an expert from the Tucson Museum of Art. The kids will have an opportunity to paint a stylized animal. I predict my All Stars will love this art project!
Our class is in the middle of Shiloh and will finish the book this week. We have been reading two chapters a day and completing an outline with the important characters, settings and events. The kids seem very engaged in the book.
Monday night the kids who have not finished their persuasive essay Elf for Hire or applying for a job of their choice will finish the final copy. About a third of the class has already handed in their final copy. I have been impressed with this project.
The math lesson on Monday focuses on finding common units or denominators to compare fractions. Then on Tuesday and Wednesday we will add and subtract fractions. I think the class will find adding and subtracting fractions easy to understand with tape diagrams and number lines.
Thursday we have our multiplication celebration at 1:00 in the afternoon. As you know, the students' will receive the ice cream sundae ingredients according to how many multiplication tests they have mastered. It is not too late to study the multiplication facts. Monday at lunch, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before school I will be available to give multiplication tests. Our wonderful CEOs are arranging donations for the ice cream sundaes. Please do not send in food that is not related to the ice cream celebration. We do not want to get sick or more hyper.

Teacher's Note December 12, 2016
Our class is going to read Shiloh, a Newbery Award winning book, the next couple of weeks. I always enjoy rereading it. Since we are reading the novel, we will not have spelling or vocabulary words for homework. Determining main idea, summarizing and understanding cause and effect will be the skills that we will focus on.
Tuesday I will introduce the persuasive writing project Elf For Hire. The kids will write their opinion with reasons and evidence why they should be hired as an elf. If your son or daughter thinks the Elf for Hire is too silly they can write as if they were applying for a job. They will be given a choice to write an essay or a letter stating why they should be hired to their potential employer. The assignment will not be due to until next Tuesday.
Last Tuesday I was not a happy teacher when 11 of my All Stars forgot their reading log. I do not want that to happen again. I will expect the students to continue to hand in their homework on time.
As we continue in our fraction unit we will learn how to simplify fractions, build a fraction number line, and compare fractions. These are important concepts for the students to understand. Please continue to monitor their comprehension of the math concepts.
On Thursday from 9:30 until 10:00 Soleng Tom will have a practice soft lock down. The exterior doors will be locked and nobody will be allowed to enter or leave the building. Please plan accordingly so you do not get locked in or out at that time.
The class has earned enough points and voted to watch a movie in their pajamas. My plan is to watch The BFG on Friday afternoon. My class may wear pajamas to school on Friday if they wish.

Teacher's Note December 5, 2016
The kids seemed pleased with their historical newspaper book project that was due on Friday! It is cute to watch them put their name on the list to present to the class and listen to them describe their topic. We only had time to listen to eight presentations and look forward to hearing the rest of the presentations on Monday afternoon or Tuesday. The newspapers will be displayed in the hall for others to enjoy. You are welcome to stop by and take a look.
This week our reading selection is all about carnivorous plants! That seems to grab the kids' attention. We will be studying informational text structures - how the text is organized and text features. The kids will be given a chance to draw a diagram about their favorite carnivorous plant.
Equivalent fractions is our math focus for the week. We will use the area model to provide evidence that fractions are equal. Then we will use multiplication and division to find equivalent fractions. Hopefully we have a solid understanding of equivalent fractions.
On Thursday we will take the twelve's timed test. We need to spend time studying the multiplication facts both at school and at home. Students that want to take a timed make up test may come in Wednesday at lunch to retake a test.
We did not build an electromagnet last week, but we will this week. I even bought new batteries so our magnets will have more power! I hope the kids tell you all about their electromagnets on Thursday afternoon.

Teacher's Note November 28, 2016
Welcome back from Thanksgiving Break! I hope the break was exactly what you needed! It was for me.
The kids will be working on their historical fiction book project this week. They will be given a paper formatted like a newspaper that contains a place for six paragraphs and 6 pictures. The news paper should be factual not the story portion of the book. If more facts are needed, students may use the internet or an encyclopedia. The pictures may be hand drawn or computer generated. I do expect the students to put forth their best effort on the writing and the pictures. The historical newspaper will be due on Friday and the kids will have the opportunity to present their project to the class. I'm excited to see their newspapers.
We finished up the multiplication and division unit last Tuesday. The assessment results will be in the Dragon Folder for you to see. We will continue to do a few multiplication and division problems so we do not forget what we have learned. The kids will take the 10s timed test on Tuesday and the 11s on Thursday. I think the kids will do well on these timed tests.
Next we go into a very extensive study of fractions. Our understanding of fractions will definitely increase! We will be drawing numerous tape diagrams to provide fraction models. I happen to really enjoy the fraction unit and hope to teach my All Stars to love fractions too.
Oh science is going to be fun this week! We will finish our flashlight and then learn about magnets and electromagnets. The students will have an opportunity to build their own electromagnet.
Last week we were not able to complete the final lesson of Family Life. We have reschedule it for this Friday afternoon. Thank you for your patience.

Teacher's Note November 21, 2016
We have plenty of activities packed into this three day school week! On Monday morning we have a docent from Tucson Museum of Art coming to teach a lesson and then lead us through an art activity. I think the kids will love the lesson and project.
We have come to the end of our multiplication and division unit. Monday we study two digit times two digit multiplication and complete a study guide. Tuesday we will review and then take the module three assessment. In an ideal world we would have one more day before the assessment, but Wednesday is totally booked. Tuesday afternoon the 9s timed test will be given.
Wednesday morning we take our writing benchmark in the computer lab. It will be expository writing and the kids can have as much time as they need. I certainly hope we have perfect attendance on Wednesday and the kids show determination.
Wednesday afternoon the final lesson of family life will occur. The boys and girls will be separated as we discuss changes through puberty. Mrs. Arce and I will teach the boys while Mrs. Carlson and Mrs. Evans the girls. Students that do not have permission for this lesson will be given another activity in a different setting.
Our language arts time will be spent reading our historical fiction book and recording facts from the book. Please make sure your son or daughter brings their historical fiction book to class. We will not have spelling or vocabulary words this week.
The kids built an electric switch on Friday and have the opportunity to build a flashlight on Monday. I think they will enjoy the chance to build the flashlight! I will probably let them keep the flashlight on the countertop a couple of days before we disassemble them.
I want to express my thanks to you for having such wonderful kids and for being so supportive. I know we are not perfect, but we keep learning and growing together. Working with you definitely makes my job far more enjoyable! Thank you!

I hope each family had a relaxing and enjoyable three day weekend! Now we are ready to get back to studying!
Our math unit has us spending one more day on division before we start two digit times two digit multiplication. We will cover the area model, partial product and algorithm multiplication strategies. The first few strategies is meant to help us comprehend why the algorithm works. The algorithm will be taught on Friday.
We have a lot of goals for language arts this week. The kids will read "The Emperor and the Kite" - I love this story! Wednesday we will practice our expository writing. The assignment will be started in class and then finished at home. I will begin reading aloud I Survived The Battle of Gettysburg. As a class we will pick out the facts included in the historical fiction book. I want to model how the students can find and record the facts in their historical fiction book.
Tuesday we start the Family Life lessons. The first six lessons are for the entire class to learn together. Only the final lesson is gender separated and requires parent permission to attend. Our topics this week will include what we learn from our families, changes in the family, decision making, communicating clearly and being assertive. I hope the kids gain a better appreciation for their family this week.
In science this week we will learn the basics of how to read electrical plans and then build a working switch! The plan is to save the switch for when we have the opportunity to build a flashlight.

I thought our field trip to De Grazia Gallery in the Sun went excellent. We had tremendous parent support providing transportation - thank you! It was an absolutely beautiful day and the kids behaved very well. I hope your son or daughter enjoyed the field trip and gained knowledge.
This will be a four day school week as we celebrate Veteran's Day on Friday, November 11. I hope your family enjoys Veteran's Day!
Our division unit will continue as we learn to divide to the thousands with a one digit divisor. Then we will be working on division story problems. We are on our sevens for the multiplication timed tests. We will take the sevens on Wednesday. I will be available before school on Wednesday and Thursday morning this week to help students needing a little assistance. I have a meeting before school on Tuesday and will not be available to work with students.
We will start taking benchmark tests this week. The kids will take a reading, math and writing test on the computer. We will take one test per week starting with reading, then math and finish with writing. This will be our first time taking the writing assessment on line. The kids will have an opportunity to practice their word processing computer skills in class. They may want to practice at home too using powertyping.com or just select a page from a book and type it on the computer.
Science should be very exciting this week as we build our own filament that lights! Plus we study and then build series and parallel circuits! I predict the kids will love these science investigations.

Teacher's Note October 31, 2016
We have an excellent week full of learning opportunities planned! I am excited about the art docent from De Grazia Gallery in the Sun coming to Soleng Tom on Tuesday to teach both a history lesson and an art lesson! We should be more prepared to appreciate De Grazia's talents and contributions when we visit the museum on Wednesday.
Our class was blessed with plenty of parents who were willing to drive. Everyone is welcome to attend if they really wish. I will finalize the list of who is driving on Monday. Those of you who have already returned your driving form, proof of insurance and drivers license should count on driving. I will contact everyone who volunteered and confirm whether or not you will be driving. Drivers, please be at our room by 9:00 Wednesday morning.
We should gain a better understanding of the math terms prime, composite, factor and multiple as we continue our multiplication and division unit. Then we will divide a three digit number by a one digit number. Hopefully we will be efficient dividing three digit numbers by Friday afternoon. We will be taking the 6s timed multiplication test on Thursday. Please encourage your son or daughter to memorize their sixes!
Last week we went to the library to check out a historical fiction book for their next book project. The kids should be reading their historical fiction now and in a couple of weeks I will give directions for the project. We will not be racing through the task.
I love the reading selection this week titled Night of the Pufflings. I could only imagine the thrill of saving the pufflings. As we read the selection we will continue to work on determining main idea and summarizing the important details. Science is about to get fun! We will add more tools to our electricity kit and build a variety of circuits. I predict the kids will love the investigations.

Teacher's Note October 24, 2016
It was great to see so many of you at the Fall Festival - the kids looked really cute in their costumes! Our PTSA definitely did an outstanding job organizing a wide variety of fun activities for all of us to enjoy! Thank you to everyone who helped in any way or attended.
Wow! What an excellent response to our field trip to De Grazia Art Museum. We have double the amount of drivers than we need. If providing transportation puts a hardship on you, you may wait until the next field trip to Saguaro National Park. If you really had your heart set on attending the field trip, we do not have to limit the number of people who attend. I will be discussing the field trip with the students and sending home the paperwork for those parents who would like to drive.
Our class has earned 50 class points and voted to have a technology day. Mr. Dotson has given us permission to bring electronic devices to school on that day. You will see a permission form in the Dragon Folder on Monday. Students that do not have permission to bring electronic devices from home may use a school computer. I will let the students use their electronics for 1 - 2 hours depending on how well the students are focused.
We will continue to work on division this week. On Thursday the kids will learn about prime and composite numbers. Wednesday we will take the fives timed multiplication test. Please review the fives with your son or daughter to make sure they have their facts memorized. Knowing facts makes division much easier.
I was very pleased with the maps and instructions from Soleng Tom to home that the kids produced. The class seemed very excited about the assignment and did a great job. They were eager to share the maps and directions with the class.
This class is extremely interested in electricity! Based on watching the excitement of lighting a bulb, they are going to totally love the other investigations.

Teacher's Note October 17, 2016
I hope everyone had an enjoyable Fall Break. I certainly appreciated the time with my family and a chance to relax.
The first quarter progress reports and Dragon Folders will be going home on Tuesday. Please return the signed envelop on Wednesday. Contact me if you have a question about any portion of the progress report. I will be happy to discuss it with you.
It is time for division! This week we will learn how to use an array, area model, place value disks and the algorithm to solve division problems. The first three strategies mentioned will help the kids understand why the algorithm works. I want my All Stars to become extremely efficient with the algorithm and understand the concepts.
Second quarter our language arts focus is on informational text both in reading and writing. We will be reading a wide variety of nonfiction and working on strategies that will help us comprehend the text. The kids will be writing summaries and instructions. Our assignment on Wednesday will be to write the driving directions from Soleng Tom to the their home using sequence words.
Our first field trip of the year will be DeGrazia Art Museum on Wednesday, November 2. The information and forms will be in the Dragon Folder. I would really appreciate your help transporting students on the field trip. Please complete the permission form and indicate if you can be a chaperone. Thanks!
This quarter we study electricity and magnets in science! We will start with a discussion on safety to establish a respect of electricity. It is an exciting unit because it is very hands on. The kids will build a variety of circuits, switches, a filament and a flashlight. I predict the class will love learning about electricity and magnets.
Saturday is the Soleng Tom Fall Festival - you definitely do not want to miss it! I plan on being there to hand out candy and participate in the fun. I certainly hope you can attend too!
Let's all set a goal to make second quarter full of wonderful learning experiences!

Teacher's Note Week of October 3, 2016
Wow! It is hard to believe we are already at the last week of the first quarter - that went fast. The students will not have school this Friday and all of next week. I hope everyone has a very enjoyable Fall Break and is ready to study again on October 17th.
I was very pleased with the biography time lines that were due last Friday. The time lines looked great and the kids seemed very confident presenting. We did not have any tears! Plus, we learned about a wide variety of people.
Monday morning we send our crayfish and structures of life science kit back to the science resource center. If your son or daughter has been doing their own investigations at home taking care of plants or animals, please have them write a paragraph or take pictures to provide evidence of their investigations. We do have a few activities to complete before we start our electricity unit. I believe the kids are going to love studying electricity too!
We will not have vocabulary or spelling words this week because we will not be reading a selection from our anthology. We are going to read the novel Because of Winn Dixie. I think it is the perfect book to wrap up the theme Everyone Has A Story To Tell. The kids will be working on their cursive and finishing up our study of Greek myths.
Monday you will have a letter in the Dragon Folder describing the fourth grade multiplication memorization and ice cream celebration. We will begin taking timed multiplication tests this week and the project will last all of second quarter. Our celebration will be at the end of the quarter. Please read the letter for more information.
Multiplication seems to be going well. Monday we have multi step multiplication story problems. Tuesday is story problems that have addition, subtraction or multiplication. Then we start division on Wednesday!

Teacher's Note September 26, 2016
Thank you for all the effort to make Grandparents' Luncheon such a success. We appreciate those people who were able to attend, who provided food and worked at the event. A special thank you to Lisa Wedman, AKA Griffin's mom, for being the chairperson - she did a fabulous job!
On Friday our biography time line is due. The kids will have some time in class to work on the project. Wednesday and Thursday night's homework will be working on their time line. The kids will very likely ask you to edit their writing. Each section of the time line should have a picture and writing. Friday the students will each have about three minutes to present their project to the class. I love to hear their presentations. Soon the time line will be hanging up for all of us to enjoy!
I am on pins and needles to learn who will win our idiom contest. Who ever wins will be on cloud nine and their homework freebie may burn a hole in their pocket. The winner will be determined on Monday.
We are ready to learn how to multiply one digit times three digits. I will teach how to use the partial product, standard algorithm and area model. The partial product and area model help the students understand why the algorithm works. We all know the algorithm is the most efficient, but we also want to know why it works. This will be a very important week to understand the concepts and I appreciate you asking your son or daughter if they understand.
You may have heard that our crayfish have arrived - eight of them! Science did get far more exciting! The crayfish will be in our room for two more weeks. This week the kids will set up their habitat and observe to see if crayfish are territorial. The kids will learn about the crayfish life cycle and compare them to snails and humans. Based on what I have observed so far, the kids love having the crayfish in our class.
Thank you to everyone for returning your federal aid card - I do not have to nag!
Let's plan on having a week full of learning opportunities.

Teacher's Note September 19, 2016
Thank you for attending parent teacher conferences last week. I enjoyed sharing information and feel the time was a good investment for a successful school year. You are always welcome to contact me if you have questions or concerns.
In Monday's Dragon Folder will the be the Federal Aid Card, if you did not already complete it at parent teacher conference. Please complete the form and return it to me on Tuesday. I really appreciate your help returning the form as soon as possible so I do not have to turn into a nag.
Starting this Tuesday and Thursday morning at 7:45, I will be available for tutoring before school. Students that would like assistance just come to my room. Only students that want to work will be allowed to stay in the class during that time.
I was extremely thrilled with the results of Thursday's math test on metric measurement and conversion. I am proud of the kids! The graded math test will be in the Dragon Folder for you to see. Now we are focusing on multiplication. We start with determining the area and perimeter of shapes. Then we work on multiplying by tens, hundreds and thousands. This would be a great time to start reviewing the multiplication facts. We want to become very fluent with our multiplication facts.
The biography time line will be due on September 30. I will send home the directions for the biography timeline in the Dragon Folder. Let's continue to work on the time line a paragraph at a time and not leave it all to do the week it is due.

I am really looking forward to visiting with you at parent teacher conferences this week. Please make sure the student attends the conference with you. We will listen to the student before we discuss other topics. The students will be dismissed at 11:40 on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Please develop a plan for lunch and after school. The kids need to be very confident they know what to do on parent teacher conference days.
This week will be different than our normal language arts routine. We will not have spelling or vocabulary words this week. Teacher's Note September 5, 2016
I hope you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend.
We took the end of the module math assessment last Thursday and returned the tests on Friday. Overall, I was very pleased with the results of the test. Many of the kids wanted to take their test home on Friday to show their parents. The rest of the tests will be returned in the Dragon Folder on Tuesday for you to view. Please ask to see your son's or daughter's test.
Next we study metric measurement in length, mass and capacity. This module only has five lessons and so it will be quick! We will be converting centimeters to meters, grams to kilograms and milliliters to liters. We should have a much better understanding of metric measurement very soon.
The kids will have an opportunity to write a persuasive paragraph about Should Kids Have Recess Everyday? The topic will be introduced Wednesday and the kids will start their prewriting. Thursday night the kids will complete their final copy if it is not already completed. Thank you for your help editing. The final copy can be hand written or computer generated.
We plan to read Pandora's Box as our weekly Greek myth. That is one of my favorite myths. Also, we will read The Case of Pablo's Nose. It is a short story featuring Encyclopedia Brown. It will be interesting to see if anyone becomes fascinated by his many mysteries. One of our goals is to gain a better understanding of inferences this week.
Wednesday is Picture Day at Soleng Tom! Everyone will be photographed in our class picture and individually. I am sure the kids will look especially attractive on Wednesday.
Looking ahead, we have Parent Teacher Conferences on September 14, 15, and 16. The students will be dismissed at 11:17. Please develop a plan for their after school care. I absolutely want the students to attend the conference. I am looking forward to talking with each of you.

Thursday night the kids will complete their final copy if it is not already completed. Thank you for your help editing. The final copy can be hand written or computer generated.
We plan to read Pandora's Box as our weekly Greek myth. That is one of my favorite myths. Also, we will read The Case of Pablo's Nose. It is a short story featuring Encyclopedia Brown. It will be interesting to see if anyone becomes fascinated by his many mysteries. One of our goals is to gain a better understanding of inferences this week.
Wednesday is Picture Day at Soleng Tom! Everyone will be photographed in our class picture and individually. I am sure the kids will look especially attractive on Wednesday.
Looking ahead, we have Parent Teacher Conferences on September 14, 15, and 16. The students will be dismissed at 11:17. Please develop a plan for their after school care. I absolutely want the students to attend the conference. I am looking forward to talking with each of you.

Teacher's Note August 29, 2016
I am excited about the learning opportunities we have planned for this week. Tuesday the kids will go to the library to select a biography book to read. They may read the book at home and in class. In a couple of weeks I will explain the time line project the kids will produce using their biography. This week we read the story Lou Gehrig: The Luckiest Man - I love this selection! On Wednesday we start our writing prompt, describe a time that you showed perseverance. Thursday I will ask for your help editing. Root words, affixes, and verb tenses are the specific skills we will study this week.
We are about to finish the module one math unit. The kids will work on subtraction story problems and then story problems that have addition and subtraction. Wednesday we will review for the end of the module assessment. Please review the study guide with your son or daughter on Wednesday night. The test on Thursday will look very similar to the study guide. I'm sure we all hope the kids have a solid understanding of place value, rounding, addition and subtraction.
Our seeds have germinated in our class and group sprouters. The kids seem excited to observe the changes and growth of the seeds. We will be setting up our bean sprouts in hydroponics to keep the plants growing. The kids will continue to observe and record the growth of the plants.
Next Monday, September 5, we will not have school. I hope you have a very enjoyable Labor Day.

Teacher's Note August 22, 2016
Thank you to the families that were able to attend Curriculum Night last Tuesday. I enjoyed sharing information with you. The families that were not able to attend will receive The Fourth Grade Curriculum Guide in your Dragon Folder for your reading pleasure.
Also in the Dragon Folder will be Rights and Responsibility Book. Please review the book. Then tear out the third page of the Rights and Responsibility Book, sign the page and return it to me. I really appreciate your help with this task.
We have plenty of language arts activities planned for this week. The kids will read My Name Is Marie Isabel from our anthology and the Greek myth Medusa - that should be exciting! We will continue to work on our persuasive essay regarding should Soleng Tom have school uniforms. Our reading focus is being able to determine first or third person point of view and language focus will be using homophones correctly.
We took the math mid module review to see if we understand place value, multiplying times ten and rounding. Some of the kids did not finish their review yet. The results will be returned to the students on Monday or Tuesday. Next we study the addition algorithm and then subtraction. We will use place value disks to demonstrate why the algorithm works. Often the word composing is used for what many of us called carrying and decomposing for borrowing. Understanding the vocabulary is useful.
Two exciting science experiments are scheduled for this week. First is Sprouting Seeds and then The Seed Soak. I hope your son or daughter will tell you about the investigations.

I have been very pleased with my All Stars. We have had perfect attendance the first seven days of school and the kids have been fantastic at completing their homework. Two great omens! This week we start more of our weekly routine by adding resource, orchestra, music and reading buddies - they will liven up our week!
I really hope to see all of you at Curriculum Night Tuesday from 6:50 until 7:30 in our room. I will share information regarding curriculum and what to expect this school. To encourage attendance, if a parent/guardian attends I will give the student a prized homework freebie coupon. Please attend if possible. Students are welcome to attend if they wish, but the conversation will be directed at the adults.
Tuesday morning our first reading log is due. Please make sure it is handed by Tuesday morning and has at least 100 minutes recorded. You are welcome to hand in a reading log on Monday if the minutes are completed and you prefer that day.
We will write our first opinion paper this week on should our school have school uniforms. I will focus on the organization of opinion writing. The first line is clearly stating your opinion, followed by reasons and evidence for each reason. Finally, the conclusion restating your opinion in other words. The kids complete an organizer before they write their rough draft. You may be asked to edit the rough draft for your son or daughter.
Our math module continues this week with rounding to different places and comparing numbers. Friday we will either review for the mid module assessment or take the assessment if I feel we are ready.

Teacher's Note August 8, 2016
Wow! What a terrific group of students and start to our school year. I was thrilled to have each family attend Pop In and have perfect attendance the first two days of class. Plus all of you have returned your Dragon Folder with all of the necessary paper work - thank you very much! I have really enjoyed getting to know the kids.
Please save the evening of August 16 for Curriculum Night. It will be an opportunity to share the curriculum that will be taught and what to expect from this school year. I hope each family can squeeze time out of your busy schedule to come.
It is time to start our weekly routine including homework. The kids will have homework Monday through Thursday. The homework is due the next day except for the reading log which will be due next Tuesday. You are more than welcome to review the homework with your child. I will discuss the reading log in detail at Curriculum Night.
This week our language goals will include understanding sentences, run-ons and fragments, narrative elements of a story, improving vocabulary and spelling. Narrative elements is just the big word for character, setting and plot. We will read The Gardener from our reading anthology and The Golden Touch as our Greek myth for the week.
Our focus in math this week will be understanding base ten place value and that each place to the left is ten times bigger than the place to the right. On Thursday and Friday we work on comparing numbers with >, <, and =. We will also be working on standard form, expanded form and unit form. We definitely want to establish a solid understanding of these concepts.
Our first science unit is Structures of Life. We start the unit searching for seeds and recording their properties. Then we will start germinating seeds and observing their growth. I predict the kids will love this science unit!

Welcome to Soleng Tom, fourth grade and Mrs. Figueroa's class! I hope we have an absolutely wonderful year!
Our first opportunity to meet will be at Pop In on Tuesday, August 2nd from 4:30 until 6:00. I look forward to meeting my All Stars and their parents. I will distribute information, offer conference sign ups and hand out the Dragon Folders. Our blog will also be projected for you to see. You may bring in school supplies on Tuesday or wait until Thursday if you prefer - either time is fine with me.
Our first day of class will be on Thursday, August 4. The first couple of days will be invested in getting to know each other, setting up routines and expectations, and starting the curriculum. There will not be homework this week, that will start next week. By Friday afternoon we should know each other far better!
Let's plan on working together this year and helping your son or daughter have many learning opportunities.

We finished up this school year and your child is now a fifth grader! Yeah!!!!!
Wednesday afternoon Tereasa Martin came into class with a group gift that I love! It is the cutest picnic basket that I have ever seen. It is green gingham with pink trim. Inside were darling plates, skewers, a game set, supplies for s'mores and a gift card for Subway. One student said, "What is a picnic with out food." It is a very clever and useful gift. I want to thank each of you for your kindness and support all year long.
I send my best wishes and warm thoughts for a wonderful summer.

Teacher's Note May 23, 2016
I thought our field trip to the U of A on Thursday went excellent. We were able to see the tree lab, main library, integrated learning center, U of A Hall of Champions, McKale Center, Student Union and a lot of the campus. According to electronic devices we walked 5.2 miles! I really appreciate all the parents that provided transportation and supervision. I believe the class enjoyed seeing the campus and perhaps many of our All Stars will be Wildcats one day.
There was a sense of excitement on Friday morning when our poetry books were due. Many of the students were eager to show their work and others were applying the final touches. Monday morning all of the fourth graders will gather in the library to read poetry to each other in small groups. The teachers will have a little treat for the students after the poetry celebration. I will invest time into grading the poetry project.
You may be just as excited as the kids to know that there will not be any homework this week. I do hope the kids stay in a routine of reading books at home during the summer. I would be happy to send home extra reading logs if you wish. The public libraries offer wonderful reading programs during the summer that I think the students would probably enjoy.
The class did well on the geometry test last Tuesday. Some of the students asked to take their graded test home last Wednesday. The rest of the tests will be in the Dragon Folder on Monday. Please ask your son or daughter how they did on the geometry assessment.
Can you believe the students just have 3 more school days until they become fifth graders? Often the end of year can be emotional for a variety of reasons. I will try to keep the kids focused and busy the last three days. I want to finish this school year strong and positive. Please encourage your son or daughter to do their best academically and socially.
The fourth quarter progress reports will be handed out Wednesday afternoon. Please ask to see your child's progress report. You can always email me if you have a question or concern.
I have grown attached to this group of All Stars and they will always have a special place in my heart. I sincerely wish them success and happiness as they achieve their goals. Please keep in touch through the years and let me know about their accomplishments - I am not going any where. My email will be the same. Friday we loved two great performances! In the morning, the orchestra shared their skills in a concert that we all enjoyed. In the afternoon, we were able to watch the amazing Soleng Tom talent show. Both events were excellent and I want to congratulate all the performers on a job well done!
This week we will be working hard to complete our poetry book that is due on Friday. The kids are expected to have written at least 25 poems. Of course, they may write more. We are hoping for a title that captures our attention and cover that looks appealing. Students need to bind their poetry. They can use a notebook, rings, or staples. The poetry book needs to stay together as a book.

All but 5 kids responded that they would bring a lunch from home. Everyone needs to bring a water bottle, cap, and wear comfortable walking shoes. We expect to be back at Soleng Tom around 1:30.
Friday at 8:45 will be the fourth quarter Strive for Excellence Assembly. Those students receiving an award will have an invitation in their Dragon Folder on Monday.

Teacher's Note May 9, 2016
Thank you for a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week! On Monday morning we had a beautifully decorated door that we all adore. Each day I received group gifts from the entire class that included beautiful picture frames, great scented candles, a darling plant, Barnes and Nobles gift card, a beautiful basket, a decorative tree and more. Please accept my sincere thanks. I have appreciated your support all year long - thank you, thank you, thank you!
We have an abundance of drivers for our U of A field trip on May 19. I will send home forms today for those who volunteered to drive. We have to pay for parking on this field trip and so we want to take fewer vehicles. Please donate one or two dollars to help cover the cost of parking fees. It will likely cost six or eight dollars per vehicle to park for the day.
I hope each of you had a wonderful Mother's Day! Hopefully the moms enjoyed receiving the gift the kids made for you in class.
We have exciting language arts plans this week as we read the humorous Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox tall tale. The kids will be writing concrete, acrostic and nature poems this week! Plus I will continue reading aloud the novel Flora and Ulysses.
Our math studies will include symmetry, sorting triangles by angles and length of sides, and sorting quadrilaterals. This is an in depth study of geometry that includes rich vocabulary words. We can handle it!

Teacher's note May 2, 2016
We have one more field trip this school year! On Thursday, May 19 we are going to the University of Arizona to take a walking tour of the campus. We definitely want to encourage the students to get a higher education. The permission forms went home the middle of last week. I did receive about 8 forms back and will probably send another form in the Dragon Folder to those who did not return their form yet.
Tuesday is the Soleng Tom Family Picnic! I am planning on attending and hope you can come too! There will be a flyer in Monday's Dragon Folder to give more details.
We have come to the middle of the geometry module and will take the mid module assessment in class on Monday. There will not be any math homework on Monday because of the assessment. The second half of the module looks fun! We will be using pattern blocks to build and measure different angles. By the end of the week, we will study symmetry.
The spelling words this week are homophones, words that sound the same, but have a different meaning and spelling. The kids will be expected to know the meanings and spelling - I will mix the order of the words.

Teacher's Note April 25, 2016
I was extremely pleased with the results of the decimal and fraction module assessment! The vast majority of the students demonstrated an understanding of the topics. Many of the students wanted to take their test home last Wednesday to show you. The remainder of the tests will be in Monday's Dragon Folder. If you have not seen their graded test, please ask you son or daughter to show you it.
We did start two dimensional geometry and it has been rigorous with new terms and symbols. Please continue to monitor your son or daughter's comprehension of the math concepts. Thanks!
We are right smack in the middle of two great books! The class is reading Because of Winn Dixie together and I am reading aloud The BFG. Sometimes it is hard to put down the book or pick which book to read because we want to know what is happening.
The kids will be introduced to a poetry project on Monday morning. A variety of types of poetry will be introduced and the kids will write a total of 25 poems or more by time the project is completed. Students who wrote poetry last year my add these poems to last years if they wish. Everyone will write 25 original poems this year. The kids can be creative and artistic with their poetry. I really do hope they enjoy this project.
The crayfish will be in our classroom for one more week before we send them back to the science resource center. Unfortunately, we are down to two crayfish. We lost a couple of crayfish last week because they got out of their water tray overnight and did not survive - bummer! We have a great science experiment to conduct on Tuesday.
Congratulations to our track team who won fifth place at the city track meet. Not bad out of approximately 30 schools. We were pleased with how the team performed.
We are absolutely going to stay focused on academics and great behavior this last month of the school year. I will be diligent assigning the work and encouraging the students to give their best effort. I want this to be a very pleasant end of the school year with everyone doing their best.
Monday is Baskin Robbins Night for Soleng Tom! I hope you have time to enjoy a scoop of ice cream. I will work behind the counter at 7:00 if you wish that I would serve you.

I thought our field trip to Camp Cooper was excellent. The weather was perfect! I appreciate all the parent support providing food, supervision, and teaching the classes. Our class had 110 volunteer hours for Camp Cooper! Plus, we had great family support for the barbeque on Tuesday night. Hopefully the kids had a wonderful learning experience.
Our class had a mini talent show on Thursday afternoon. Congratulations to Niya, Zoe and Carrie for being selected to try out for the school talent show. Good luck!
This week is rich with language arts activities. We will read "In My Family" and study the vocabulary and spelling words. Our class will start reading the novel Because of Winn Dixie - I love the book! Also, the students will begin writing a wide variety of poetry as they produce a poetry book over the next month. Plus, I will continue reading aloud the book BFG. I am excited about the language activities we have planned.
We completed the lessons on decimals and fractions. Monday the students will start a study guide in class and then complete it for homework. Please review the study guide with your son or daughter on Monday evening. If the students understand the study guide, I predict they will understand the module assessment. Tuesday we are scheduled to take the test - that means no math homework on Tuesday night. Next we will go into depth on two dimensional geometry.
Friday morning at 7:30 in the library is the volunteer breakfast. Please, please, please try to fit it into your busy schedule if you have volunteered at any time this year. The parent support at Soleng Tom is truly outstanding and we wish to recognize and thank you. Please accept my sincere thank you for your support through out this school year.
Saturday is the City track meet at the U of A Drachman field. I want to wish Joseph, Mariah, Tylor,

Teacher's Note April 11, 2016
You probably heard that eight crayfish were delivered to our class on Monday and five survived the week! That made for a very exciting science week. We hope the other crayfish survive the next month in our class.
We leave for Camp Cooper Tuesday morning at 9:00! Please hand in any food items on Monday morning. Then I will know if something needs to be purchased. Parents please come to the classroom with the students at 8:30 on Tuesday. We will discuss the plans and expectations for the field trip then load up. My students not going to Camp Cooper on Tuesday will spend the day with Mrs. Evans' class. The students not spending the night at Camp Cooper will spend Wednesday morning with Mrs. Carlson's class until we arrive back at Soleng Tom. We received excellent parent support for our Camp Cooper field trip. Thank you for donating items for the field trip and providing supervision. I am very excited and hope it is a pleasant learning experience for the kids.
Thursday morning the fourth graders will take the AZ Merit science assessment. Please make sure the students study for the test on Wednesday evening. The students will have a practice test and the big ideas of the units to study.
Thursday afternoon will be our class talent show! Students can sign up for the talent show on Monday morning. They must bring everything they need to try out. Each class can select three performances to try out for the school talent show. Student council will select the performers for the school talent show.
Due to our busy schedule, we will have vocabulary words this week, but we will not take the spelling test. The class will read an excerpt of Blue Willow and I will continue to read aloud The BFG by Roald Dahl.
We continue our math unit by studying addition and subtraction of decimals story problems. Then we use decimal and fractions to describe money amounts. Finally, the kids will have money story problems to solve.

Teacher's Note April 4, 2016
We completed the AZ Merit assessment last week. I was pleased with the kids for giving their best effort! We did have a foreign format on the math portion of the exam and I hope the students figured out how to answer the questions correctly.
This week we return to our weekly routine with vocabulary and spelling words. We will read informational text about the Saguaro Cactus - something we are familiar with in Tucson! We will also work on reference sources and the organization of informational text.
We will also return to our decimal unit. The kids will place decimals and fractions on a number line - then compare decimals. Next we add and subtract decimals.
Perhaps the biggest excitement of this week will be the arrival of our crayfish! They are due to arrive sometime on Monday. We will need to learn how to care for the animals properly. We study the structure of the body and discuss exoskeletons. Then the kids will set up a habitat for the crayfish. Often the kids love having crayfish in the room. We study snails too, but the science resource center does not have live snails. If you have live land snails that we could keep in our room for a month, that would be great!
Camp Cooper is just one week away! I am very excited! I would really appreciate if everyone would return the permission form and we can finalize our plans. We will definitely be communicating more as we get closer to the field trip.

Teacher's note March 28, 2016
I hope each of you had a wonderful Spring Break and feel refreshed for fourth quarter. I am definitely looking forward to an exciting quarter!
On Tuesday, March 15 I was very proud of my athletes, musicians and students. Our track team participated in a very competitive five school track meet and tied for second place. Congratulations to Carrie, Mariah, Trevor, Belle, Danitza, Tylor, and Joseph for qualifying for City! Many of the students had a personal best at the meet. Wasn't the Music Review at Sabino awesome! I was pleased with the kids' singing, playing boom whackers and cooperating as an entire school to perform together! I thought the performance was powerful! Finally, I was incredibly proud of my students when a veteran substitute teacher describe the kids as very respectful, responsible and caring. I could not have been any more pleased with my kids than I felt on Tuesday, March 15.
This is a very important week! We take the AZ Merit standardized tests. Tuesday we will take the writing test. Thursday we do Reading Part 1 and Math part 1 and Friday is Reading Part 2 and Math part 2. It is our opportunity to show how much we have learned so far. We have been working hard for 4- 5 years preparing to demonstrate what we know. I will encourage the students to their best and have a positive attitude. Due to testing, we will not follow our normal homework routine. Let's minimize stress. The kids will be thrilled they do not have as much homework. I will be asking the students to look through their language arts and math notebooks as a review for AZ Merit. Plus, they will be expected to continue with their weekly reading log.
The Dragon Folders will be sent home on Tuesday with the third quarter progress reports. Please remove all of the information from the progress report envelopes, sign the back of the envelope and return it empty to me on Wednesday morning. You can let me know on the envelope or by email if you would like to discuss the progress report.
Our trip to Camp Cooper is just a couple of weeks away! I will send information and permission forms to those who have not returned their papers. We leave on Tuesday, April 12 by bus to spend the day and night at Camp Cooper. It should be a fun learning experience! Please read the information in the Dragon Folder carefully and ask me if you have any questions or concerns about our future Camp Cooper experience. This week and next we will be preparing for our Camp Cooper adventure!

On Tuesday, March 15 I was very proud of my athletes, musicians and students. Our track team participated in a very competitive five school track meet and tied for second place. Congratulations to Carrie, Mariah, Trevor, Belle, Danitza, Tylor, and Joseph for qualifying for City! Many of the students had a personal best at the meet. Wasn't the Music Review at Sabino awesome! I was pleased with the kids' singing, playing boom whackers and cooperating as an entire school to perform together! I thought the performance was powerful! Finally, I was incredibly proud of my students when a veteran substitute teacher describe the kids as very respectful, responsible and caring. I could not have been any more pleased with my kids than I felt on Tuesday, March 15.
This is a very important week! We take the AZ Merit standardized tests. Tuesday we will take the writing test. Thursday we do Reading Part 1 and Math part 1 and Friday is Reading Part 2 and Math part 2. It is our opportunity to show how much we have learned so far. We have been working hard for 4- 5 years preparing to demonstrate what we know. I will encourage the students to their best and have a positive attitude. Teacher's Note March 14, 2016
We have one exciting week ahead of us! This is the last week of the third quarter and the students do not have school on Friday - it is a teacher grading day. Tuesday is super exciting with our track meet and the Musical Review! Plus, student council has planned a Spirit Week!

Thursday - Wear green for Saint Patrick's Day
Tuesday morning the track athletes and I will meet at 7:30 AM to attend the track meet. Mrs. Lowe will be a substitute teacher for the students that are not attending the meet. The team will be returning to class about 1:00. I hope all of my students have a wonderful day whether they are working at school or competing at the meet. Good luck track athletes! Thank you to the parents that are helping with the meet and/or transporting students.
The Musical Review is going to be awesome! The students need to arrive at Sabino by 6:00. They are expected to wear a solid red, white or blue shirt and a pair of blue jeans. Please no heels or flip flops so the students can safely and quickly enter and exit the stage. I will be there to greet the kids when they arrive and in the choir room after the performance until a parent picks up all the students. I believe it will be a fantastic concert! Mrs. Brown has done an excellent job organizing this special event!
Even with all the excitement of the week, the majority of the time will be spent working on academic achievement. There will not be spelling or vocabulary words this week. We will be working on a persuasive writing prompt, understanding prepositions, wrapping up the character sketch and practice using a thesaurus.
We are currently studying tenths, hundredths and the relationship between fractions and decimals. The kids seem to have a solid understanding of the concepts so far. Some students already took their unit 5 fraction test home to show their parents. The rest of the tests will be in Monday's Dragon Folder. If you have not seen the test, please ask your son or daughter to show you their test.
You will notice paper work in the Dragon Folder regarding the Camp Cooper field trip. Please complete and return the form to help us plan the dinner. We will focus on the Camp Cooper field trip after we return from Spring Break.
The first week back from Spring Break will be very important - we will be taking the writing, reading and math portions of the AZ Merit. The writing is scheduled for March 29, Reading 1 and Math 1 will be March 31, and Reading 2 and Math 2 on April 1. Please make sure the students are in attendance and have a positive attitude!

Teacher's Note March 7, 2016
I hope you have already saved the evening of March 15 for our All School Music Revue at Sabino High School. It is sure to be an event you do not want to miss! The kids and Mrs. Brown have been working very hard on this production. The performance starts at 6:30.
About half of my students did not have enough time to finish the fraction test last Friday. They will have time to finish on Monday. The graded tests will be returned on Tuesday. Next we study fractions and decimals. Engage New York teaches decimals by using metric measurement. We will spend three days understanding tenths and then move to hundredths. I believe the kids will grasp the concepts and homework will require less time to complete.
We are still working on the final copy of the character sketch. Rodeo Vacation and benchmark testing has limited our time in the computer lab. The kids continue to rotate through the five computers in our class. We will show perseverance and finish!
A Very Important Day is our reading selection for the week. It is about immigrants to the United States becoming citizens. It should be informative and entertaining to read. We will continue to study reference sources and spend time understanding parts of speech.
Last week the Camp Cooper permission slip and information were sent home. Thank you to those who already returned your forms. Please complete the forms and return them to me as soon as possible. I think this field trip should be extremely fun and educational.
May we all have a week full of learning experiences.

I hope your Rodeo Vacation went very well for you and everyone feels recharged for school.
We have a couple of special events this week. Wednesday morning we have Spring pictures. Check the Dragon Folder for more information. Thursday we have our friendly docent from Tucson Museum of Art coming to teach us a pottery lesson. That will be exciting to work with clay.
Hopefully the kids will complete their character sketch this week. We need more time on the computers to complete the final copy. Our reading selection is an informational text titled Fire. The kids should know far more about fire fighters this week. We will be reviewing the features of informational text.
We are approaching the end of our fraction unit. There are three lessons left and then a review on Thursday. Please review the study guide with your son or daughter on Thursday evening. Friday the class will take the end of the module assessment. We all want the kids to demonstrate a solid understanding of fractions.
Let's have a wonderful week full of learning opportunities.

Teacher's note February 22, 2016
This will be a three day school week and then Rodeo Vacation! Thursday and Friday there will not be school. In my opinion, Rodeo Vacation is a wonderful Tucson tradition. I hope you have an enjoyable four day weekend - it should be beautiful weather!
This week we will work on grammar, writing our character sketch and improving our cursive. We will not read a selection from our anthology or have spelling and vocabulary words. Please edit the character sketch with your son or daughter on Monday evening. Tuesday we will bring the lap tops into our room and work on the final copy.
The kids will know how to multiple fractions of whole numbers times a mixed fraction using the distributive property by the end of this week. We will be working on multiplying fraction strategies all week. Last Friday the kids seemed to totally understand multiplying a proper fraction times a whole number - yeah!
Many of our All Stars are trying out for the Soleng Tom track team and this Wednesday the team is announced. Monday we will have practice. Tuesday there will not be practice so the coaches can use the time to analyze the data and select the team. Wednesday afternoon the athletes will be given a letter informing them whether or not they made the team. I certainly admire all of the students that were brave enough to try out for the team.
May we have many learning opportunities this week!

Teacher's Note February 15, 2016
The kids looked super cute all dressed up for the literature parade on Friday! We had a fun day reading, watching the parade, exchanging valentines, singing and working on an art project.
Tuesday the spell-a-thon money is due if you want to be considered for a prize. The students can hand in their envelope to me or the front office. Just make sure your donations are handed in before 5:00 so you have a chance for a prize. Please support our wonderful PTSA and participate in the spell-a-thon.
I love the reading selection from our anthology titled One Grain of Rice. It is a mathematical folk tale with beautiful illustrations. We will have vocabulary and spelling words this week. Also, we will continue with our character sketch writing project. The kids have written paragraphs about their looks, personality, hobbies and now we are working on our favorites. Each favorite must have its own paragraph. The kids may write about their favorite movie, restaurant, park, show, game, pet ...
Next the kids will write about the important people in their life and finally their goals. I really want each student to put their best effort into this writing project.
The fraction unit continues with adding and subtracting mixed fractions. The students will be shown a couple of different strategies and then they can decide which strategy works best for them. Please continue to monitor your son's or daughter's progress. These are multi step problems we are solving and the kids need a solid understanding of the process. I am available before school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday if your son or daughter needs assistance.
Structures of Life, our next science kit, has arrived! We will be conducting a seed search and setting up sprouters this week. I predict the kids will love this science unit! First we study plants and then we focus on animals - specifically snails and crayfish.
Thursday a docent from Tucson Museum of Art will come to Soleng Tom to teach us an art lesson and then guide us in an art project. We will be studying the art of the Northwest United States Native Americans. I predict the kids will love the art project.
I hope each one of us stays healthy and has many learning opportunities this week!

Teacher's Note February 8, 2016
We had an excellent field trip to Saguaro National Park last Wednesday. The weather was absolutely beautiful, our volunteers were very supportive and the docents did an excellent job teaching the kids. I hope your son or daughter told you about the field trip. Thank you to all the parents who provided transportation and supervision.
Thursday we took the Spell a thon test! The tests were returned to the students that afternoon. I hope you already know the results of your child's test. If not, ask to see their paper. Please give your best effort into finding sponsors and collecting the money. I believe the money is due on February 16 to be considered for a prize.
This week will be exciting too! Thursday and Friday the students will be dismissed at 11:40 for parent teacher conferences. Please have a plan in place for eating lunch and after school care. The students will have an option of ordering a sack lunch from school. Please discuss the lunch plans and transportation with your son or daughter to avoid any confusion. I am in the process of arranging the parent teacher conferences. It is not too late to schedule an appointment if you would like to talk with me. I absolutely want the student at the conference.
This is also Love of Reading Week! We have three guests readers scheduled to share a book with the class. Plus we have the literacy parade on Friday - it is usually one of the high lights of the entire year! The students will dress up as a character from a book and parade through the school with that book in their hand. Parents are welcome to come and watch the parade if they wish.
After the parade on Friday, the class will have an opportunity to exchange Valentine cards. If the kids want to hand out Valentines cards, please give every student one. Our class list will be in Monday's Dragon Folder to assist with the Valentine writing.

This week we say good bye to our mini science Weather Forecasting unit and hello to the Structures of Life kit. The kids will love Structures of Life! It is very hands on!
Please save the date of April 12th and April 13th for our overnight field trip to Camp Cooper. I know some of you are asking what date we go so you can arrange time off to go on this field trip.

Teacher's Note February 1, 2016
I hope the weekend gave all of us a chance to rest and gain our health. We definitely had germs circulating last week.
Thank you for attending Night at the Museum last Tuesday night. It was great to see the children showing you their work and I enjoyed visiting with many of you. We counted 19 families in attendance from our class - that is fantastic! Thanks again for your support!
Wednesday we will go on our next field trip to Saguaro National Park East to learn about desert communities. Drivers, please come into the class with the children in the morning. We will go over the agenda, directions and make car assignments. We want to be at SNP by 9:30. After we complete the four rotations, we will eat a picnic and then take a short scenic hike before returning to school. I'm hoping for beautiful weather on Wednesday!
Thursday morning we will take the spell a thon test. It is a day earlier than our normal routine and I want to communicate clearly to avoid surprises. We have already taken words 1 - 15 and will take 16 - 30 on Thursday. If we hope to win the pizza party for fourth grade, each student needs to study the spelling words.
Please be aware that on February 11 and 12 the kids will be dismissed at 11:40 for parent teacher conferences. It is not necessary to meet with every parent. I will contact the parents that I would like to discuss a topic. Please let me know via email if you would like a conference and I would be happy to set up an appointment.
Also on February 12 will be the Literature Parade. You will want to start planning which book your child will carry and how they will dress. The Literature Parade is one of the fabulous traditions at Soleng Tom that we look forward to every year! After the parade, my class will be allowed to handout Valentine cards. I will send home a class list next week.
Please continue to monitor your son's or daughter's comprehension of the fraction concepts. I noticed a few kids not completing their math homework - that is not okay. I appreciate your continued support.
