Thank you very much for attending parent teacher conferences last week. Our class had perfect attendance at conferences and I really do appreciate your time and support.
We also had a fantastic turn out for Grandparents Luncheon! Thank you to all who attended or provided food for the event. I know the kids were super excited to see their family members. It is great to see the support from parents and grandparents.
We will have spelling and vocabulary words this week even though the kids do not have school on Friday. Our weekly spelling test will be Thursday. The kids will read a Chinese folk tale this week called The Emperor and the Kite. It is a cute story with a lovely message. We will continue to work on understanding narrative elements and cause and effect.
By Thursday the students should be efficient at using two addition strategies. A new rule will be to use two strategies, but one has to be the standard algorithm. We will also work on rounding and estimating.
This will be the last week we have the crayfish as class pets. The kids will certainly miss them. Once we complete the Structures of Life lessons, then we start learning about electricity. That science kit is equally exciting!
I hope you already know that Friday, October 4th is a teacher grading day - the kids do not have school. Tucson Unified School District has Fall Break October 7-11. The kids will return to school on Monday, October 14. Have a wonderful Fall Break and I will look forward to the second quarter.

Teacher's note September 23, 2013
This will most likely be our most exciting week of the year so far! We have parent, teacher and student conferences, technology day, Grandparents Luncheon and the 50 in 4 minutes celebration! Not to mention an art project, crayfish experiments and reading buddies. Who knew school could be so exciting!
I look forward to meeting with each of you during our scheduled conference this week. You can expect the conference to take about thirty minutes. I absolutely want the student to attend. Due to the conferences, I will not be available for tutoring before school this week.
The students have earned 50 class points and voted for a technology day as a reward. Mr. Dotson did give us approval to bring our technology tools to school if parents give the students permission. The school will not be responsible for lost or broken items. I will write a letter and send it home in Monday's Dragon folder describing the event and asking parent permission.
Our language arts time will be spent writing a friendly letter to a grandparent and studying different types of graphs or charts. Please help me edit the grandparent letter on Tuesday evening. We will not have spelling or vocabulary words this week.
The kids should have a better understanding of our base ten number system as we make a 1,000 book. Next we will work on addition and subtraction strategies of whole numbers. The students will learn three or four strategies to solve addition or subtraction problems. Don't forget our 50 in 4 celebration is scheduled for this Friday at 1:00. I certainly hope each one of my students gets to celebrate. Please continue to work on multiplication facts at home.

Teacher's note September 16, 2013
We had fantastic fiction book reports presented last week! I feel pleased that so many students completed their book report ahead of schedule. We enjoyed great posters, dioramas, PowerPoint and Prezi presentations. The kids seemed very confident sharing in front of their peers and we did not have any tears - occasionally students are afraid of presenting.
Friday we took the multiplication and division test. The results will be sent home in Monday's Dragon Folder for you to see and hopefully celebrate. We start our first fraction unit this week. We should be able to add and subtract fractions with like denominators by the end of the week. We plan on making our own fraction kit and using a variety of models that describe fractions. This will be a quick little unit before we go to place value, addition and subtraction. The kids will be thrilled that the fraction homework should not require much time.
Parent, teacher and student conferences are scheduled for next week. The students will be dismissed at 11:40 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Please discuss with your son or daughter whether or not to buy a sack lunch at school. I will not be available to tutor students before school the week of September 23 because of conferences. I absolutely want the student to attend the conference. I believe they will be the most important person in attendance. A reminder notice will be sent if you have already signed up for a time. I will contact the families who do not already have a scheduled appointment with me. I honestly look forward to visiting with each family and sharing information.

Teacher's note September 9, 2013
I am excited to see the fiction book reports that will be due on Friday! The kids will have a few minutes of silent reading each morning this week to help them complete their book. I do expect each student to have their report finished and ready to present to the class. It is always interesting to see which books the kids selected and how they want to prove to us they read it. No doubt, Friday will be exciting!
Our math goals this week will be to become very efficient with at least two multiplication strategies, two division strategies and be able to write a division story. We will spend time focusing on the standard multiplication algorithm and understanding how it works. Friday we will take the unit three multiplication and division test. I hope the students show a solid understanding of the concepts. You probably already know we are working on our fifty facts in four minutes this month.
Our hydroponics are looking very healthy! Please ask your son or daughter to explain hydroponics to you. I think it will be very likely that we observe the bean seed completely through the life cycle and get a new seed from our plants. Our science lessons will begin to switch from plants to animals. We will compare invertebrates and vertebrates. Then study the classification of animals. Science will get really exciting when our crayfish and snails arrive in our class.
I hope we all have a wonderful week full of learning opportunities. Thank you for encouraging and assisting your child in their educational pursuits.
