I was extremely pleased to be part of the Soleng Tom community on Friday. Our track team won the regional meet and showed excellent sportsmanship! Numerous parents helped provide transportation and work at the meet. The fifth grade teachers shared that the students that were at school were fabulous too! It is very heart warming to see so many people work together to achieve goals. Thank you to everyone!
Monday morning at 8:45 will be the Striving for Excellence Assembly to honor the students receiving a problem solving or effort award. The invitations were in the progress report envelopes of the students that will be honored. The children love when a family member can attend and watch them receive their certificate.
I hope you are already aware that AIMS testing will be the week of April 7 - 11. Please make sure students arrive on time and avoid any unnecessary appointments during school hours that week. The kids will be happy to know that I will assign far less homework during AIMS. The kids have worked hard all year and now it is time to show what they know. Let's all be positive and encouraging regarding the tests. The fourth grade teachers will allow the students to suck on a candy during the test. You may donate a bag of Jolly Ranchers, mints or your favorite hard candy if you wish.
This week we will be reviewing for AIMS and continuing with our current units. Our math unit is matching algebra equations to graphs that show changes over time. The kids seem to be doing well with the concepts. The spelling list for the week features words with silent letters and noticing the pattern for those words. We will be talking about slow changes and fast changes as we continue our Changing Earth Unit. We have plenty to learn and do this week!

Teacher's note March 24, 2014
Can you believe it is already fourth quarter? This school year seems to be going very quickly! I hope the fourth quarter will be our best one of the year!
The third quarter progress reports will be sent home Monday. Please remove all of the papers included in the envelope, sign the back and return the empty envelope to me on Tuesday. I would appreciate you contacting me if you have any questions or concerns regarding the progress report.
I wanted to share with the parents that 11 fourth graders went to The Community Food Bank on March 13 to donate $1,100 and tour the facility. The staff from the food bank were impressed that our students donated such a large amount and how they behaved during the hour tour. Thank you for your help making Hug- a- grams a success and a service to the community.
Let me write a quick review of what we will be studying this week. Our current math unit is graphs that show change over time and algebra. We will also be reviewing topics that we have studied through out the year in preparation for the AIMS test. During language arts the class will study persuasive techniques and write a persuasive paragraph about killer whales being used for shows. Our weekly spelling test will be given on Thursday instead of Friday this week. We have two science investigations, Downhill Rollers and The Great Earth Mover, to conduct this week as we continue Our Changing Earth unit.
Friday will be an exciting day for all of us! I will be going with half of the class to the Regional track meet at Sahuaro High School. We leave before school starts and return after lunch. Those students not on the track team will get to experience a morning with a fifth grade teacher doing special activities. All the fourth graders will get to watch an exciting movie, Summer of The Monkeys, based on the novel by Wilson Rawls during the afternoon. The track kids have been working hard and are ready to compete against four other schools. Friday should be very interesting for all!

Teacher's note March 10, 2014
We have reached the last week of third quarter. This Friday will be a teacher grading day and all of next week will be Spring Break. We will work hard Monday through Thursday and then enjoy our break until Monday, March 24.
Tuesday we have an art lesson taught by a docent from Tucson Museum of Art. The kids will be working with clay and have a chance of getting dirty. The students should wear clothes that are washable. I believe the kids will love this art project.
We have plenty to read this week as we complete the novel Because of Winn Dixie and read Saguaro Cactus from our anthology. We will have vocabulary and spelling words to study this week, but I will not give the spelling test. Our biography book reports are due on by Wednesday. The students can present their report on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
Monday is the final day to focus on multiplying fractions and then we study algebra and graphs that show change over time. These two concepts are important for the students to learn and presented in a very interesting way using the investigation activities. I think our class will gain a solid understanding of both concepts.
18 Arizona Hats will be on display in our class this week. Each hat is unique and comes with a card describing who wore the hat and what was happening in Arizona at that time. I hope the kids enjoy learning Arizona history by studying the hats.

Teacher's note March 3, 2014
Our field trip to Saguaro National Park was absolutely lovely! The weather was perfect, the rangers were informative and kind, and the scenery was beautiful. Thank you to Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Buchanan, Ms. Leiby, Mr. Mourelatos, Mr. Conroy and Mr. Goforth for providing transportation and chaperoning! We really appreciate your time.
We will be taking tests on Monday and Tuesday of this week to determine what we need to focus on before the AIMS tests in April. Reading will be tested on Monday and math on Tuesday. Our weekly schedule will change due to the testing. We will not read a selection from our anthology and therefore will not have vocabulary or spelling words.
I am excited for our class to read the novel Because of Winn Dixie, it has become a fourth grade favorite through the years. The kids will be completing a study guide as we read the novel. We plan to finish the book by March 13 and then watch the movie with the entire fourth grade.
Our fraction unit will be a little more challenging this week as we add and subtract fractions, use a fraction number line and learn how to multiply fractions times a whole number. The kids will know how to provide evidence as proof of the adding, subtracting or multiplying. This should be a fun math week!
I know the book report schedule shows the biography book report is due on Friday, March 8. February went flying by very fast for everyone including me. I have decided to allow the book reports to be due in between March 8 - 12. Two students have already completed their book report. If the student can complete it by Friday, March 8 then please do. If not, next Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday would be fine too!
Our Weather unit has been packed up and returned. We need to analyze some data and write a summary before we start the unit on The Changing Earth. This unit has many interesting investigations for us too! We will be doing plenty of science in the near future to complete the unit before AIMS!
