We are very excited for the Family Barbecue on Tuesday evening! We are asking the kids to be in Mrs. Vuturo's room by 5:45 to prepare for the boom whacker concert. The fourth graders will dance immediately following the music performance. Both performances should take a total of 30 minutes to allow time to eat, play, and visit.
Tuesday I will be at the University of Arizona viewing the College of Engineering senior projects. I have a special interest in my son in law's project. I will be gone during the school day, but will return for the family barbecue.
The final book report of the year is due on Friday. It should be a nonfiction. We have already enjoyed three excellent book reports by kids that finished a week ahead of schedule. The students are welcome to finish and present early is they wish.

Teacher's note April 23, 2012
We finished up our AIMS testing last week and now hope for the best when we receive the results. This week we will return to our routine. The kids will be learning about carnivorous plants as we read Fly Trap. Usually the kids find this selection very fascinating. We have been working on a tall tale in class and the final copy is due on Thursday. I hope the class enjoyed less homework last week because we will return to our homework routine too.
Please save Tuesday, May 1st for the Soleng Tom Family Barbecue. The Family BBQ is always an excellent event with food, games, and a campus full of wonderful people. The 4th graders will have a musical and dance performance too! Our plan is to take a total of thirty minutes for both performances. Of course we encourage every student to participate, but we realize students have other commitments too. I know I am looking forward to May 1st and the Family BBQ.
I am pleased to write that the Soleng Tom track team won the city championship on Saturday, April 21.
It was a very exciting day for the team! Congratulations to Abby, Connor W., Sophia, Wesley, Jackson, Kaden and Tiana for qualifying for City! The coaches are extremely pleased with our athletes and their behavior. Way to go Dragons!
I left my lesson plans at school and do not have the homework schedule with me. Monday afternoon I will list the homework on our blog.

Teacher's note April 16, 2012
This is a very important week for students in the state of Arizona as they show what they know on the AIMS test. We will be taking two tests a day on Monday through Thursday. Monday both tests will be science and the other three days will each be one reading and one math test. I sure hope we have perfect attendance this week. Please be sure that the kids eat breakfast and minimize stress.
There will not be spelling or vocabulary homework this week. The students will continue with their reading log and review math in their notebook or vmath. I believe the kids will be excited to learn there will be far less homework this week.
I have enjoyed reading the character sketches and feel pleased with the effort the students put into their writing. This week the kids will write a tall tale about themselves. I'm sure their tall tales will be interesting and humorous too.
Perhaps the most exciting learning activity of the week will be the kids building a flashlight with a working switch and no exposed wires. I am always amazed at the different models of flashlights that are produced.
Best wishes to all of the students on AIMS testing. Also, good luck to those athletes competing in the City meet on Saturday. Hopefully we are well prepared for this week!

I trust everyone had an enjoyable Spring Break! Now it is time that we get back to work on our academics.
Approximately half the class has completed and handed in their character sketch. Tuesday morning we will be in the computer lab and hopefully that will be enough time to complete the final copy, it is due. This week the kids will have an opportunity to write a tall tale featuring themselves as the main character. I expect the story will be one to two pages long and the final copy will be written in cursive.
The graded multiplication and division test will be sent home Tuesday in the Dragon Folder. It is impressive to see so many students master three or four different strategies. We will continue to practice multiplication and division strategies as we move into unit nine, patterns of change in graphs.
You probably already know that next week, April 16 - 19, is the AIMS testing. Each day we are scheduled to take two sub tests. Monday will be science. Then Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be math and reading. Please do not schedule any appointments on those four days that will pull students away from the testing. The tests are meant to be practice and you are more than welcome to review the material with your son or daughter.

We will have three days of school before we go on Spring/ Easter Break on Thursday. We return to school on Tuesday, April 10. I sincerely hope each of you have a wonderful Easter/ Spring Break.
Our time this week will be spent working on our character sketch in the computer lab. I hope the kids will bring home a copy of their character sketch and ask you to help edit. I am trying to edit as many as possible while we are in the computer lab, but I would certainly appreciate your assistance. We will not have spelling, vocabulary or a story assessment this week. The fourth graders will watch Because of Winn Dixie because we all read the novel.
The multiplication and division test is planned for Wednesday morning. I hope the kids do extremely well. The graded tests will be given to the students on Tuesday, April 10th.
Our class will be building series and parallel circuits. Then we will have an opportunity to build a switch.
Once again, enjoy your vacation!
