Teacher's note September 24, 2012
Thank you for attending parent teacher conferences last week. I hope you feel the conference was worth your time and effort. I believe the conferences were beneficial.
Congratulations to the All Stars for winning the miniature Stories That Soar magic box! Our class submitted more entries into the magic box than any other class at Soleng Tom. We were awarded a beautiful magic box as a trophy to keep all year. Also kudos to Isabella, Isaiah, Zach, Aaron, Abby and Amanda for having their stories or illustrations featured during the show.
We have a very exciting week ahead of us! Monday is Fuddruckers day for Soleng Tom. Tuesday evening is Skate Country from 6:00 to 8:00 and I hope the kids go skating if possible. Thursday will be our very popular Grandparents Luncheon and Friday is a teacher grading day. It is definitely an eventful week!
Please be aware that we have Fall Break October 1st through the 5th. The kids and teachers will return to school on October 8th.
We are still reading the novel Babe as a class. Therefore we will not have spelling or vocabulary words this week. Thursday the entire fourth grade will enjoy viewing Because of Winn Dixie.
The kids did take the data analysis and probability test last week. The results will be in Monday's Dragon folder for you to glance through. The students are always encouraged to review and try again if they did not earn a three on an assessment. Our next math unit we will be multiplying one digit times two digit numbers. We should be excellent at breaking apart numbers and writing equations by the end of the week.

Teacher's note September 17, 2012
The book reports have been awesome! I was very pleased with the book reports produced and the confidence that the children displayed while presenting. The students should be able to tell what grade they received on their report and presentation.
This week is parent, student and teacher conferences. I really want the student to be at the conference if at all possible. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the students will be dismissed at 11:40. Please have a family discussion to determine if the students should purchase a school lunch and what they are going to do when dismissed. Planning ahead can avoid confusion on our early out days. I am excited to have the opportunity to chat with each family.
We will not have spelling or vocabulary words this week. Instead of a story from our reading anthology, the kids will be reading Babe. We will focus on cause and effect relationships as we read the novel.
I am hoping to complete the data analysis and probability math unit by Thursday and give the unit assessment. If we do not have time on Thursday, then the test will be Friday.
Our class has the privilege of participating in the Global Children's Challenge that starts on Wednesday. Each student will receive a free pedometer to track their steps each day. This program integrates fitness, technology, geography, and social studies together. It is a 50 day challenge that the main goal is to improve our physical fitness. Teacher's note September 10, 2012
Our biography book reports are due this Friday! We have already listened to one book report presentation that was very well done. The kids select what type of book report they would like to produce. Each student will be given an opportunity to share the important details to the class in an oral presentation. The students may use note cards if they wish, but they can not just read a report to us. I am sure we will have a wide variety of very interesting book reports.
I plan on spending three more days on analyzing and comparing two sets of data. Thursday our focus will turn to understanding probability and then numerical values of probability. The kids usually really enjoy learning about probability and conducting experiments.
Mrs. Perdreauville's kindergarten class is our learning buddies. Our class is matched with her students to work on learning activities together. It is super cute to watch the fourth graders teaching the kinders. I thought our first time together went well and the kids seemed excited. You are welcome to ask your son or daughter what they thought of learning buddies.
Next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, September 19-21, will be half days to allow time for parent teacher student conferences. A note will be in Monday's Dragon Folder to remind you of your conference day and time. A absolutely want the student to attend the conference. I have allotted thirty minutes for each conference and look forward to getting to know each of you better. I enjoy the conferences!
I hope we all have an enjoyable week full of learning opportunities.

Teacher's note September 4, 2012
I hope you had a very pleasant Labor Day weekend and had the opportunity to participate in one of your favorite leisure time activities.
We have a couple of special events occurring this week. Tuesday we have the Kind Kids Campus assembly that Mrs. Damek has organized. This will be the first time Soleng Tom Elementary has done this activity and we will know far more details after the assembly. The second special event is pictures on Wednesday. Everyone will have their picture taken for the yearbook and lunch card. I believe we will have our class photo taken too - I sure hope we have perfect attendance.
Our reading selection this week is one of my favorites, Amelia and Eleanor Go For a Ride. Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt are the main characters. The reading skill that we hope to improve is locating information. I will ask your help editing our weekly prompt on Thursday evening. Please return the rough draft to be attached to the final copy. The kids should be reading their biography book for the report that will be due on September 14th.
In math we have progressed to the point that we are collecting our own data to record, organize and analyze. The kids are working with a partner and developed a question. We have surveyed our class. Next the kids will graph the data. Then survey Mrs. Vuturo's class, graph their data and finally compare both sets of data. Ask your son or daughter about their survey question.
Our noise level in the classroom has been increasing lately. We will have a class discussion about it on Tuesday. There will be consequences, positive or negative, until I feel it is back to an optimal learning environment.
I certainly noticed those students that have been working hard on their multiplication facts. We had many students show a great improvement in their speed and accuracy.
Parent, teacher and student conferences will be held the week of September 17. I will send a reminder note to those parents who already have scheduled the conference. I'm going to contact those families that do not have a conference yet and discuss what time works for you.
