I hope we all had a wonderful Rodeo Days vacation. Tucson's weather definitely cooperated with our vacation.
Last Wednesday a group of fourth graders from Soleng Tom donated $1,106 to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. Those kids were given an excellent tour and details about our food bank. Thank you to everyone who helped with the Hug - a- gram sales that made this community service project possible.
In language arts this week we will be reading Saguaro Cactus from our anthology and discussing elements of nonfiction. Plus our class is reading the novel Because of Winn Dixie and focusing on the narrative elements.
We are going to be spending a few more days on adding decimals before we come to the end of our fraction, decimals and percents unit. I hope we are ready for the unit 6 test on Thursday, but I may wait until Friday if I feel we need more time to review.
The kids seemed excited about our electricity unit when they tried to find different ways to light a bulb on last Tuesday. This week the kids will know more about a circuit, light bulb, charge and current.
Our social studies time will be spent studying the contributions of the Native Americans in Arizona as we read and study Arizona: Nations and Art. Each student will be given their own copy of that book to keep as a gift from the state of Arizona.

Teacher's note February 20, 2012
Do you already have your Rodeo Days Vacation planned? We will have school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and then be on Rodeo Vacation on Thursday and Friday. I sincerely hope each of you enjoy your four day week end!
Our Hug -a - gram sales were very successful! The fourth grade community service project earned $1,290. We will be donating $1,090 to the Community Food Bank on Wednesday morning. Three students from each class fourth grade class were selected to hand in the money and take a thirty minute tour around the facility. Did you know that the food bank buys in bulk and can purchase about ten times the amount of food per dollar? That means more than $10,000 worth of food will be purchased with the money donated. Thank you to everyone who cut, glued, or sold Hug-a- grams. The remaining two hundred dollars will be used to pay for track expenses.
Our class is currently focusing on understanding decimals The kids will be able to draw a picture of the decimal, compare which is larger and then add decimals by Wednesday. I think we will be very confident in this section of our math unit.
The electricity unit has arrived! I am almost certain each child will love this unit! It is a very hands on science unit. Our first task will be to see how many ways we can light a bulb. The kids will learn about a circuit and the flow of electricity.

Teacher's note February 13, 2012
You most likely noticed that our fraction unit had challenging problems to be solved. The students may use an equation or drawing to solve the fractions problems. Ideally, they will be able to use both methods. This week we will use our homemade fraction kit to sort fractions into landmarks and later to order them from least to greatest. Thursday our fraction unit will begin studying decimals, fractions and percents. The kids usually find that portion of this unit easier to understand.
The kids are currently writing a children's author of their choice. Please check to see if your son or daughter knows their home address. The kids are welcome to use the school address, but it is exciting to receive mail at home. By Wednesday the students should have their letter written, envelope addressed and ready to mail.
Tuesday we have a very special day planned! We will be celebrating Arizona's 100th birthday with all the fourth graders rotating through Arizona activities and eating fresh tortillas! Then Tuesday afternoon our class will enjoy a Valentine's Day celebration. The kids will have time to exchange valentines and Kaden's mom has offered to bring us in a treat to enjoy. I am sure we have everything we need for the celebration. I have mentioned to the kids that if they distribute any valentines, they must give each student in our class one.
The spell-a-thon money is due this week for those who want to be eligible for a prize. I hope each student participates to the level you feel comfortable. I certainly hope that I have a lot of students that get to go on the limo ride!
I'm still looking for field trip drivers to Saguaro National Monument. Please complete the form in the Dragon Folder if you are able to help.

Teacher's note February 6, 2012
Please remember that this Wednesday is an early out day for parent teacher conferences. The kids will be dismissed at 11:17. Discuss with your child whether or not you want them to eat a sack lunch purchased from our cafeteria. I still have openings if you would like to conference with me - just let me know.
Thank you to all of the families that were able to attend The Night at the Museum. It was great to see so many people and the kids excited to show their family a few things that we have been doing.
We have a wonderful addition to our All Star class! I want to welcome Malachi and his family to our class and school.
The kids did a great job on their biography book reports. The kids are far more confident presenting in front of the class now compared to the beginning of the year. The new book reports are displayed in the hall outside of our classroom.
I have also been very impressed with the stories too much of a good thing that have been handed in. The kids really worked hard on their story. Many wrote far longer stories than I was first expecting. Some of our students still need to finish the final copy. Tuesday we begin our next writing project of writing a letter to our favorite children's author. The kids will browse through a website of authors who encourage letters from students to select an author and their address. Wednesday we will discuss the organization of a friendly letter and the kids will begin their web.
You probably noticed that we are currently working on fractions. This week we will work on combinations that equal one, adding fractions, and building fraction cards. The kids will be working with improper, mixed and proper fractions. A couple of the lessons this week will be a challenge because the denominators are not common. Please be patient the next couple of days as we work through these challenging assignments.
We took our spell-a-thon test Friday and the results will be in today's Dragon Folder. Now the kids can put their best effort into finding sponsors. I certainly hope many of my students get to go on the limo ride.
We have three special events this week. Our Hug a gram sales start this week and the 4th grade kids will be given an opportunity to sell and deliver the valentines. It offers many great math lessons! Tuesday we have a presentation titled Too Good To Throw Away to teach about recycling as part of our changing earth science unit. Finally, on Friday a ranger from Saguaro National Monument will present Desert Creepers. The ranger will even have a few animals for us to see.
