I hope the weekend gave all of us a chance to rest and gain our health. We definitely had germs circulating last week.
Thank you for attending Night at the Museum last Tuesday night. It was great to see the children showing you their work and I enjoyed visiting with many of you. We counted 19 families in attendance from our class - that is fantastic! Thanks again for your support!
Wednesday we will go on our next field trip to Saguaro National Park East to learn about desert communities. Drivers, please come into the class with the children in the morning. We will go over the agenda, directions and make car assignments. We want to be at SNP by 9:30. After we complete the four rotations, we will eat a picnic and then take a short scenic hike before returning to school. I'm hoping for beautiful weather on Wednesday!
Thursday morning we will take the spell a thon test. It is a day earlier than our normal routine and I want to communicate clearly to avoid surprises. We have already taken words 1 - 15 and will take 16 - 30 on Thursday. If we hope to win the pizza party for fourth grade, each student needs to study the spelling words.
Please be aware that on February 11 and 12 the kids will be dismissed at 11:40 for parent teacher conferences. It is not necessary to meet with every parent. I will contact the parents that I would like to discuss a topic. Please let me know via email if you would like a conference and I would be happy to set up an appointment.
Also on February 12 will be the Literature Parade. You will want to start planning which book your child will carry and how they will dress. The Literature Parade is one of the fabulous traditions at Soleng Tom that we look forward to every year! After the parade, my class will be allowed to handout Valentine cards. I will send home a class list next week.
Please continue to monitor your son's or daughter's comprehension of the fraction concepts. I noticed a few kids not completing their math homework - that is not okay. I appreciate your continued support.

Teacher's Note January 25, 2016
Tuesday night from 6:30 to 8:00 is the Soleng Tom Night at the Museum! You can come and go on your own schedule. Our school walls will be covered with beautiful art work from all the grades. In the library will be samples of language arts or social studies projects and the cafeteria will display math and science curriculum. To encourage attendance, I will offer a homework freebie to any student that has a parent or grandparent attend. I do hope you can fit Night at the Museum into your busy schedule.
This week's spelling words are the first fifteen words of our Spell a thon list. Friday we will take the first fifteen words and next week we will take the rest of the list. Please encourage your son or daughter to do their best on the spelling tests. The class from each grade with the highest percentage correct wins a pizza party!
We will be reading a folktale called "In The Days of King Adobe" from our anthology. It is a very clever and humorous story. We will focus on the characteristics of folktales and fables. A variety of fables and folktales will be read in the next couple of weeks.
We are approaching the middle of our fraction study. Tuesday we will review the concepts and work on a study guide. Wednesday the kids will take a mid module assessment. The good news is that there will not be math homework on Wednesday. Thursday we start studying fractions greater than one.
The kids might be excited for track to start on Monday. It is not too late to join if your son or daughter is interested. I want to wish all those trying out for track good luck! This week we will have practice on Monday and Thursday from 2:45 until 4:00. I will be one of the track coaches and will not be available after school until around 4:15. The best time to contact me during the spring is before school or by email.

Teacher's note January 18, 2016
We had a wonderful field trip to De Grazia Gallery in The Sun last Wednesday. Nine terrific adult volunteers provided transportation, the weather was beautiful and the kids behaved excellent. Thank you to the volunteers for spending your day with us and making the field trip possible.
Now we will start to prepare for our next field trip to Saguaro National Park East the first week in February. The permission form will be sent home in the Dragon Folder on Tuesday. We will need parent drivers for this field trip too.
Thank you for volunteering to help with Hug-a-grams. All of the hearts have been cut out or already sent home to be cut out. If you plan on donating the kisses, please send in the chocolate by January 22. Then we will start send the hearts and kisses home to be hot glued. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all your help.
Hopefully you saw the Spell-a-thon packet that was sent home on Thursday. If you didn't see the packet, please ask your son or daughter if it is in their back pack. I would like to encourage every family to participate in the spell-a-thon as much as they feel comfortable. Our PTSA is truly amazing and the spell-a-thon is their one fund raiser of the year. It is well organized and the kids have the opportunity to win lots of prizes. Please participate!
Please save next Tuesday, January 26 for Night at the Museum. It is an evening Soleng Tom students display some of their work for parents and grandparents to see. You can stop by to see their work anytime between 6:30 - 8:00 PM. I always enjoy visiting with parents and students at Night of the Museum.
This week our class will set up a mini weather station so we can gather weather data for two weeks. Then we analyze the data to search for patterns. The kids will pretend they are meteorologists!
Our fraction unit continues as we learn to add mixed fractions using a tape diagram, number line and bonding. We will also practice more fraction story problems later in the week.
I hope this will be a wonderful week for all of us!

Teacher's Note January 11, 2016
Our first field trip of the year will be this Wednesday as we go to De Grazia Gallery in the Sun. Drivers can arrive at school no later than 9:15. We plan is to go on a guided tour of the facilities and museum. Then we will do a short art activity and have a picnic lunch before we return to school. I always enjoy this field trip and hope the students will too! Thank you to the parents who volunteered to provide transportation and supervision.
Tuesday morning at 9:15 is the Strive for Excellence Assembly for fourth grade. The students receiving an award this quarter had an invitation placed in their progress report envelope. The recipients love to have their family attend the assembly if at all possible.
The track information and permission form will be sent home on Monday for those kids interested. Please read over the information and return the form if your son or daughter would like to participate. I am one of the coaches and will encourage the students to try out for the track team.
As we continue our fraction unit, this week we work on ordering fractions on a number line, comparing fractions and adding and subtracting fractions. The first day of fractions on a number line was a bit of a challenge. Hopefully we comprehend number lines better now. Thank you for reviewing the math concepts with your son or daughter on the nightly homework.
The students have been writing an essay about their holiday vacation. The kids were asked to describe three things they did over the holiday. Plus they needed an introduction and conclusion paragraph so five is the minimum number of paragraphs. Students may write more if they wish. They may ask you to edit their sloppy copy for them. If the final copy is not handed in by Wednesday, then the rest becomes homework on Wednesday night.
Please check the Dragon Folder for information about the upcoming Soleng Tom music performance and Hug -a- grams. The Dragon Folders will be rich in information this week.
Martin Luther King Day will be celebrated next Monday and we will not have school. We will be learning about the Civil Rights movement and try to gain a better understanding about Martin Luther King Day.

Welcome back to the second semester! I hope you had a very enjoyable last two weeks and look forward to 2016. I think our vacation went very quickly and I am absolutely looking forward to all the activities we have planned for this semester.
I would like to express appreciation for all the kind gifts I received for my birthday and Christmas. Many of you donated for the group gift and so I would like to thank you for the gift card for a pedicure and manicure - I will certainly enjoy those. Plus my family enjoyed a super yummy basket and gift card from Kneaders. Please accept my sincere thanks - you were very generous. I also want to thank you for donating food items for our multiplication celebration. We had a surplus thanks to your generosity.
The second quarter progress reports and this week's Dragon Folder will be sent home on Tuesday. Please remove the items from the progress report envelopes, sign the back and return the empty envelope to me on Wednesday. Also, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding the progress reports.
Field trip permission forms were sent home the last week of school before break. Our first field trip will be to De Grazia Gallery in the Sun. I will resend papers to those who have not returned their permission form yet. If you volunteered to drive, you will be sent a transportation form to complete. I appreciate your efficient response returning the necessary paperwork.
We will finish up our electricity science unit this week and then begin studying weather. Monday the kids will build an electromagnet. If time permits, they will have an opportunity to light a model home with a working switch and no exposed wires. Both of these science activities are exciting.
Fractions will continue to be our focus during math. We will go into great depth with fractions and will invest about another six weeks studying them. I am pleased with how well the students seem to comprehending fractions so far. We will definitely review on Monday to refresh our memories.
