We are excited to go on our field trip Tuesday, April 30 to listen to the concert! We leave Soleng Tom on the buses at 9:30 and return about 1:30. All of us will eat our lunch when we return to school - don't worry we will munch a snack before that time. I am excited that all of our 3-5 graders have the opportunity to attend the same concert. Five students from our class ordered a school lunch and so 26 students should be bringing their own lunch on Tuesday.
The last nonfiction book report is due this Friday! I hope the kids put their best effort into this final book report. I look forward to hearing the presentations and seeing the book reports.
On Monday, May 6 our class will be going to the Arizona Historical Society and University of Arizona. I am still recruiting another driver to provide transportation. Please let me know as soon as possible if you can help transport us. I will be sending home paperwork to those parents who have agreed to drive. Please complete the form and provide a copy of your drivers license and proof of insurance card. Thank you very much!
Next Tuesday, May 7 is the Soleng Tom Family Barbecue and the 4th grade music performance. The kids need to be at Soleng Tom by 6:00 PM and they perform at 6:15. The performance should last less than thirty minutes so everyone has time to eat, go to the silent auction and do the other activities. Please attend!
This past Saturday Soleng Tom won the city track championship! Many of our class mates earned themselves a ribbon! It was super exciting to see our athletes do so well. It was also thrilling to see their friends come and cheer for Soleng Tom. Congratulations to our athletes and thanks for all of you that came to support the team! Soleng Tom is a very supportive community!

Teacher's note April 22, 2013
I am very pleased with the effort the students demonstrated last week during the AIMS testing. Our attendance was fantastic - nearly perfect the entire week! As far as I could observe, the kids were focused on doing their best. Now we will be happy to return to a normal weekly schedule.
The PTSA has planned a Dragon Diner night Monday at Baskin Robbins at Camino Seco and Broadway. The Soleng Tom staff will be serving up the ice cream. My shift begins at 6:00 if you want to put me to work. I do hope you have an opportunity to enjoy some delicious ice cream.
Thursday morning is our Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast. Please join us for breakfast in the library starting at 7:30 if you have volunteered your time in any way this year. I hope you can fit the breakfast into your busy schedule - we really do appreciate all our volunteers!
Our spelling words will have an added challenge this week as we study homophones, words that sound alike. The kids will need to spell the word correctly and determine which homophone is being used based on the sentence. I will alter the order of the words.
The kids have been given a poetry packet. Friday we wrote a biopoem. We will write one poem at a time until all 25 or more poems are completed over the next few weeks. I will encourage the students to put their best effort into this project and be creative. I think the kids will actually enjoy the poetry unit.
Only two weeks until the last book report of the year is due. The kids should be reading or finished with the nonfiction book of their choice. I know some of the kids have already planned what type of book report they want to produce. I certainly hope the kids are planning ahead to avoid stress.
We have two field trips in our near future. We have everything we need for our April 30th field trip to the concert. But we need more drivers for our field trip on May 6th to the U of A and Arizona Historical Society. Please let me know if you can help provide transportation. I hope to complete all of the field trip details this week.

Teacher's note April 15, 2013
This week will be an opportunity for the students to demonstrate how much they know as we take the AIMS test. Fourth graders will take two science tests on Monday and then one reading and math test each day Tuesday through Thursday. All of the tests are untimed and the students may take as long as they need to complete each sub test. Wednesday we will not be dismissed until 2:40 just in case a student needs the time to complete a test. Testing begins at 8:50 and late students will not enter the room until the end of a testing session. Please avoid tardies next week. I have encouraged the students to eat breakfast and have a positive attitude. We have worked hard and now it is time to show what we know.
The kids will be required to sit quietly until everyone finishes each test. I am going to strongly encourage they use that time to read the nonfiction book for the last report of the year.
There will not be spelling, vocabulary or homework this week. The kids cheered when they heard no homework! Students are welcome to review their math notes at home each evening to refresh their memory.
Did you hear that the crayfish arrived in our class? The kids seemed extremely excited with the first opportunity to pick them up and observe their structure and behavior. No doubt they will enjoy the investigations in our near future.

Teacher's note April 8, 2013
Our AIMS test is just around the corner! I hope you are aware that AIMS testing will be the week of April 15th - next week. Fourth graders will take science, reading, and math tests. We do not have a writing assessment. I would love to have perfect attendance during that week. Please try to avoid appointments on Monday through Thursday. We will continue to work very hard to prepare for the AIMS.
This week we will maintain our language arts routine with spelling and vocabulary words. The reading skill that we will focus on is determining fact and opinion. We will be reading informational text titled The Gold Rush. As we read, we will discuss the structure and format of informational text.
The class took the multiplication and division test on Friday. The graded tests will be in Monday's Dragon Folder for you to review with your son or daughter. Next we will learn how to read and make graphs that show change over time. This unit also includes an algebra element as we use a variable to write equations. We will continue to review multiplication and division as we move ahead. We have not totally mastered division and multiplication - yet.
Ask your son or daughter to sing you our gallon song complete with the movements. It should be good for a couple of chuckles.
Science is soon going to get far more lively! The crayfish and snails should arrive this week. We will be learning about vertebrates, invertebrates and exoskeletons. I predict the students will totally love having the animals in our class.
