Teacher's note November 26, 2012
Welcome back from what I hope was a wonderful Thanksgiving vacation.
Our class won the competition for the student council food drive. I already knew you are very generous and now we have even more evidence to support the claim. Certainly, the people who eat the food will be very grateful.
We have a lot to learn this week. As we read an excerpt from The Cricket in Times Square, the students will be working on improving their ability to draw conclusions. The kids will be writing a five paragraph persuasive essay on should students have homework on the weekend? Our spelling words this week are possessive nouns. The challenge will be to spell the words correctly and place the apostrophe in the right location. Our geometry unit continues with determining area, lines and line segments, classifying triangles, congruency, and motions. We are building geometry flip charts to help us remember the geometry vocabulary. During science the kids will be building series and parallel circuits and then construct their own functional switch. As you can see, we do have plenty of learning opportunities planned this week.
I am pleased to share that my third grandchild will be born this week. When it happens, I will be out of the building for the rest of the week to spend time with family and care for my first two grandchildren. I will check my email as occasion permits.
I send my best wishes to all of you.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Figueroa

Teacher's note November 19, 2012
Everyone is excited about only three school days and then we get to celebrate Thanksgiving! We have great learning opportunities planned, but they do not include spelling or vocabulary words this week. The kids will be writing a persuasive book review and using Publisher to produce the final copy. We will continue symmetry and learn about finding the area of a shape during math. Monday afternoon's science experiment is to build our own filament that glows - that should be exciting!
I am very thankful for wonderful students that are in my class this year and for their supportive families. You were extremely generous donating to the Soleng Tom food drive - thank you. I hope you enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Figueroa

Teacher's note November 12, 2012
As you know, there will not be school on Monday in honor of Veterans Day. May you have an enjoyable three day weekend.
The fiction book reports have been very interesting and well done. I am very pleased with the effort the students put into their book report. We did not have time for all of the students to present on Friday. Tuesday and Wednesday the students will be given a chance to present their book report.
We have a couple of items that need to improve. First, some students are not handing in their reading log on time. The number of students missing reading logs seems to be increasing. Students may hand in their reading log on Monday, but it is due every Tuesday. Please encourage your son or daughter to hand it in on time. Second, we have had an increase of students that have run out of lunch money. It slows down the lunch line and makes more work for the cafeteria staff if four or five students a day runs out of money. Please develop a plan whether it is weekly or monthly to keep track of when lunch money is due. Thank you for your help with both of these items.
Our objectives in geometry this week will be to understand parallel lines, angles and symmetry. The kids should gain a solid understanding of right, acute and obtuse angles. We use our power polygons to build angles and symmetric designs which makes this unit enjoyable and very visual.
Friday a ranger from Saguaro National Park will come to Soleng Tom to present Hohokam Mall to the fourth graders. We will learn how the Hohokam tribe found food, shelter and other necessities while living in the Sonoran Desert. This is the first of three lessons that a ranger will teach us and then next semester we will go to Saguaro National Park on a field trip.
I send my best wishes to each of you.
Warmly,
Mrs. Figueroa

Teacher's note November 5, 2012
Monday morning the kids will be doing a special art activity with a docent from the Tucson Museum of Art. It is the first lesson in a series of three. I will predict that the students will love the art lesson and activity. The students' work will be on display for your visual pleasure very soon.
Our fiction book report is due on Friday! The students should have completed their book and are deciding how they want to prove they read the book. Students may present their book early if they are ready. Book reports always add a little bit of excitement to our routine. I look forward to seeing what the students present.
We are moving forward with our 2 dimensional geometry unit. I hope the students continue to practice measuring in metric and customary units. We will work on determining perimeter, classifying polygons and sorting quadrilaterals this week.
Thursday morning Soleng Tom will have a special fitness day and the entire school will walk around the neighborhood. I hope you read the handout in last week's Dragon Folder that explained the event in detail. Parents are welcome to join the event if they wish. Fourth Grade will start the walk at 9:20 and if you wish to walk with us be at our class by 9:10. Please inform me if you think your son or daughter is not healthy enough to make the approximate one and a half mile walk.
I have had a wonderful past ten days visiting with my family from Germany. Monday I will spend the time with family and a terrific substitute will be taking care of our class. I will be back at Soleng Tom on Tuesday.
Let's make this a terrific week!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Figueroa
