I am excited about the learning opportunities we have planned for this week. Tuesday the kids will go to the library to select a biography book to read. They may read the book at home and in class. In a couple of weeks I will explain the time line project the kids will produce using their biography. This week we read the story Lou Gehrig: The Luckiest Man - I love this selection! On Wednesday we start our writing prompt, describe a time that you showed perseverance. Thursday I will ask for your help editing. Root words, affixes, and verb tenses are the specific skills we will study this week.
We are about to finish the module one math unit. The kids will work on subtraction story problems and then story problems that have addition and subtraction. Wednesday we will review for the end of the module assessment. Please review the study guide with your son or daughter on Wednesday night. The test on Thursday will look very similar to the study guide. I'm sure we all hope the kids have a solid understanding of place value, rounding, addition and subtraction.
Our seeds have germinated in our class and group sprouters. The kids seem excited to observe the changes and growth of the seeds. We will be setting up our bean sprouts in hydroponics to keep the plants growing. The kids will continue to observe and record the growth of the plants.
Next Monday, September 5, we will not have school. I hope you have a very enjoyable Labor Day.

Teacher's Note August 22, 2016
Thank you to the families that were able to attend Curriculum Night last Tuesday. I enjoyed sharing information with you. The families that were not able to attend will receive The Fourth Grade Curriculum Guide in your Dragon Folder for your reading pleasure.
Also in the Dragon Folder will be Rights and Responsibility Book. Please review the book. Then tear out the third page of the Rights and Responsibility Book, sign the page and return it to me. I really appreciate your help with this task.
We have plenty of language arts activities planned for this week. The kids will read My Name Is Marie Isabel from our anthology and the Greek myth Medusa - that should be exciting! We will continue to work on our persuasive essay regarding should Soleng Tom have school uniforms. Our reading focus is being able to determine first or third person point of view and language focus will be using homophones correctly.
We took the math mid module review to see if we understand place value, multiplying times ten and rounding. Some of the kids did not finish their review yet. The results will be returned to the students on Monday or Tuesday. Next we study the addition algorithm and then subtraction. We will use place value disks to demonstrate why the algorithm works. Often the word composing is used for what many of us called carrying and decomposing for borrowing. Understanding the vocabulary is useful.
Two exciting science experiments are scheduled for this week. First is Sprouting Seeds and then The Seed Soak. I hope your son or daughter will tell you about the investigations.

Teacher's note August 15, 2016
I have been very pleased with my All Stars. We have had perfect attendance the first seven days of school and the kids have been fantastic at completing their homework. Two great omens! This week we start more of our weekly routine by adding resource, orchestra, music and reading buddies - they will liven up our week!
I really hope to see all of you at Curriculum Night Tuesday from 6:50 until 7:30 in our room. I will share information regarding curriculum and what to expect this school. To encourage attendance, if a parent/guardian attends I will give the student a prized homework freebie coupon. Please attend if possible. Students are welcome to attend if they wish, but the conversation will be directed at the adults.
Tuesday morning our first reading log is due. Please make sure it is handed by Tuesday morning and has at least 100 minutes recorded. You are welcome to hand in a reading log on Monday if the minutes are completed and you prefer that day.
We will write our first opinion paper this week on should our school have school uniforms. I will focus on the organization of opinion writing. The first line is clearly stating your opinion, followed by reasons and evidence for each reason. Finally, the conclusion restating your opinion in other words. The kids complete an organizer before they write their rough draft. You may be asked to edit the rough draft for your son or daughter.
Our math module continues this week with rounding to different places and comparing numbers. Friday we will either review for the mid module assessment or take the assessment if I feel we are ready.

Teacher's Note August 8, 2016
Wow! What a terrific group of students and start to our school year. I was thrilled to have each family attend Pop In and have perfect attendance the first two days of class. Plus all of you have returned your Dragon Folder with all of the necessary paper work - thank you very much! I have really enjoyed getting to know the kids.
Please save the evening of August 16 for Curriculum Night. It will be an opportunity to share the curriculum that will be taught and what to expect from this school year. I hope each family can squeeze time out of your busy schedule to come.
It is time to start our weekly routine including homework. The kids will have homework Monday through Thursday. The homework is due the next day except for the reading log which will be due next Tuesday. You are more than welcome to review the homework with your child. I will discuss the reading log in detail at Curriculum Night.
This week our language goals will include understanding sentences, run-ons and fragments, narrative elements of a story, improving vocabulary and spelling. Narrative elements is just the big word for character, setting and plot. We will read The Gardener from our reading anthology and The Golden Touch as our Greek myth for the week.
Our focus in math this week will be understanding base ten place value and that each place to the left is ten times bigger than the place to the right. On Thursday and Friday we work on comparing numbers with >, <, and =. We will also be working on standard form, expanded form and unit form. We definitely want to establish a solid understanding of these concepts.
Our first science unit is Structures of Life. We start the unit searching for seeds and recording their properties. Then we will start germinating seeds and observing their growth. I predict the kids will love this science unit!
