We had a very pleasant field trip to the Saguaro National Park on Thursday. The kids seemed to enjoy themselves while participating in the learning activities. Thank you to the nine parents that provided transportation and spent their morning with us. The drizzle was not a problem for our group. One of the Rangers mentioned, "The kids were real troopers!"
I keep finding bags of Kisses on my table or counter top. Thank you for all your help preparing for Hug a grams. This week we are concentrating on gluing the chocolate to the paper. I really appreciate the donation of time and Kisses.
This week is going to be super exciting! Tuesday evening is Night at The Museum at Soleng Tom. It will be a chance to have your son or daughter walk around the school and tell you about a few things they have done this year. The art in the halls is absolutely beautiful! We have a display in the computer lab. The language arts and social studies will be in the library and the cafeteria will have a samples of the science and math work. The museum will be open from 6:30 until 8:00. I sure hope to see you Tuesday evening.
Thursday the kids will take the second half of the Spell a thon test. I hope they do well on the test and finding sponsors. Our PTSA is extremely supportive of the students and staff at Soleng Tom. I sure hope we return that support on this fund raiser.
Thursday will also be the first day of track practice. I am excited that the majority of our class is brave enough to try out for track. I am one of the track coaches and will be at practice until about 4:15 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. I will not be available for phone calls or emails during that time period.
Friday morning we have a ranger from the Grand Canyon coming to give a presentation to the fourth grade. Last year it was fabulous and we expect the same this year.
I hope you had a chance to see the results of the addition and subtraction math test. Some of our students need to review and take the test again. The class seemed stronger in addition compared to subtraction. We will continue to work on subtraction strategies during our ten minute math activities. I am available before school Tuesdays and Thursdays for those students who would like a little more assistance.

Teacher's note January 21, 2013
I am excited about our field trip to Saguaro National Park on Thursday. We will leave a few minutes before 9 and return to eat lunch in our cafeteria around 12:30. I will ask the drivers to be in our class by 8:45 to discuss the field trip, car and groups assignments. Everyone should wear pants and closed toed shoes. Each person should also have a bottle of water. I will predict the students will love the activities and beautiful scenery!
Tuesday the addition and subtraction test will let me know how well the students understand the different strategies. The graded tests will be returned to the students on Wednesday and sent home for you to see. Next we will study fractions, percents and decimals. This unit has excellent activities to help visualize the fractions and decimals. Please monitor your child's progress during this unit -sections can be challenging.
Our spelling words for this week are the first fifteen words of the spell a thon. We want to put forth our best effort to get all of the words correct. Next week will be words 16-30. I will post the words on the blog very soon.
Only two weeks until the biography book report is due. Has your child been reading their biography?
This week our social studies will focus on the three regions of Arizona and the Native American tribes that lived in those regions. We will spend the most time reviewing the Hohokam to prepare for the field trip.
We will continue to act as meteorologists as we collect weather data and learn about the instruments used to gather information and predict weather.
I believe we have a wonderful week of learning opportunities ahead.

Teacher's note January 14, 2013
We have a terrific weekend planned! Monday we have our final art project with the docent from Tucson Museum of Art. The kids will use the pinch technique to form an artistic animal. I sure hope they remember to wear clothes that are easy to wash in case they get dirty.
In Monday's Dragon Folder you will notice the spell-a-thon packet. I would like to encourage every family to participate. Our PTSA has organized an excellent fund raiser with so many rewards for the students. Plus the money earned is spent on our students or school. Next year could be very challenging financially, so this would be the year to support the spell-a-thon.
Monday track permission forms will be sent home to the students who express an interest. Mrs. Vuturo and I will be the track coaches this year. Students need teacher and parent permission in order to try out for the track team. Students are expected to give their best effort on school work in order to gain teacher permission. I think we have great athletes in our class!
Thank you, thank you! We have enough drivers volunteer to take our class to Saguaro National Monument on January 24th. Also, many of you volunteered to cut or glue hug a grams. I really appreciate your support!
Congratulations to Zach and David for being elected as our student council representatives for second semester. I am sure they will do an excellent job. Amanda and Vincent did terrific fulfilling their student council responsibilities first semester.
Let me give you a brief description of what curriculum will be covered this week. Our spelling words will all have the prefix un or dis. The kids are working on personal narratives and using quotations correctly. Wednesday evening I will ask for your help editing their stories. The subtraction strategies that we will learn to use this week are open numberline, algorithm, drag and breaking apart the number. The kids will be asked to subtract using two strategies and one has to be the algorithm. Monday we will set up a mini weather station and the kids will gather data as if they were meteorologists. Our class will be reading about Martin Luther King Jr. and the fourth grade will watch the powerful movie Ruby Bridges on Thursday afternoon. I honestly believe we do have a terrific week planned.

Teacher's note January 7, 2013
Welcome back to the second half of the school year! First, let me express thanks for the wonderful group gift. The gift cards will allow me to go shopping, get a pedicure and eat some chocolates! Sounds like the perfect gift. Thank you cards will be sent home on Monday. Unfortunately, some gifts did not have a name attached and I will have to do detective work on Monday. I appreciate all of your help and kindness shared through out the year.
The second quarter progress reports will be in Monday's Dragon Folder. Please remove all of the papers, sign the back of the envelope and return it empty on Tuesday. Please contact me with any questions or wishes for more details.
In Monday's Dragon Folder will be the permission form for our first field trip. We will be going to the Saguaro National Park on Thursday, January 24. The plan is to leave about 8:45 in the morning and return about 12:20. We will eat lunch at school when we return. I am hoping that parents will volunteer to drive and chaperon. Every student will need to return a signed permission form and those parents who wish to drive can let me know on the form. I will send more details to our drivers.
The students will be writing personal narratives third quarter. This will be the kids' chance to write a story with themselves as the main character. Our first prompt will be Too Much of a Good Thing based off from the book Chocolate Fever. The kids will describe something they love, a problem develops and then solved. We will be working on using quotation marks correctly.
Our Electricity science unit will be returned at the beginning of this week and we will complete our notebook pages. Then we will immediately start with Weather,a mini unit that only lasts one month.
Third quarter we will study Arizona geography and history. This first week we focus on the geographic regions and then the first people in Arizona. Our field trip to the Saguaro National Park will give us a glimpse into how the Hohokam tribe survived in the desert.
The kids should have better number sense of 10,000 by the end of the week. We will build a 10,000 chart as a class. Plus we will continue to work on addition and subtraction strategies.
I am looking forward to an exciting and educational second half of the school year!
