I hope you had a wonderful Spring Break and welcome back to school!
Many of the students were able to complete their character sketch before Spring Break and others need to hand in their final copy. The students not finished yet will need to complete their character sketch as soon as possible.
We will have spelling and vocabulary words this week as we read the selection "In My Family". The skill that we will work on is sequencing events. Our spelling words all have a silent letter and we will try to notice the patterns.
As we continue our math unit we will work on the division and multiplication algorithm. Embedded in this unit is a section on liquid measurement and so we will get to build Gallon Man to help us understand the relationships. The unit 8 test is scheduled for Friday. I would really appreciate your help making sure the students understand multiplication and division this week. Please review their homework and check for understanding.
In this week's Dragon Folder will be a permission form for a field trip to the Arizona Historical Society in May. We will use private transportation and I would really appreciate your help if you can volunteer to drive. Our field trip to the concert on April 30th will be on a bus and so we will not need as many chaperons. Thank you for your continued support - I really do appreciate it!
May we all grow, reach and succeed!
Warmly,
Mrs. Figueroa

Teacher's note March 18, 2013
Welcome to the fourth quarter of the school year! This going to be exciting to have Spirit Week, Skate Country, Strive for Excellence, the regional track meet and family life all in the same week.
The spirit days will be:
Monday - Twin Day
Tuesday - Pajama Day and Skate Country from 6:00 to 8:00
Wednesday - Arizona Sports Day
Thursday - Crazy Hair Day
Friday - Mix and Match Day
The third quarter progress reports will be in Monday's Dragon Folder. I would appreciate your help removing all of the papers from the inside, signing the back of the envelope and returning it empty on Tuesday. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
The fourth grade Strive for Excellence Assembly is Tuesday morning at 8:45. You should have received an invitation in last Monday's Dragon Folder if your son or daughter is receiving an award.
Thursday our track team will be competing at the regional track meet at Sahuaro High School. I will be at the track meet with our team. My students not on the track team will spend the morning in Mrs. Vuturo's room with Mrs. Salcido and Mrs. Benson. The track team will be back in the afternoon. I want to wish all of the track team good luck, especially the 14 students from our class!
Friday morning we have two unusual events planned. The first is a planned lockdown drill. It is a practice. If you are in the building at the time, you too will be in a lockdown. You may not want to be in the building if you have another appointment. The second, is the human development lesson from family life. The boys and girls will be separated for that lesson from10:30 to 12:00. Mrs. Dimas and Mrs. Benson will teach the girls while Mrs. Vuturo and I instruct the boys.
The kids have been working on their character sketch and we set Friday as the deadline for the final copy. The students may decide if they want to hand write or computer produce the final. The cover is a sketch of the items that were described in the writing.
We begin working on long division this week. We will review go with what you know and then teach the algorithm on Wednesday. We will continue to practice both multiplication and division.
May we all continue to grow, reach and succeed!

Teacher's note March 11, 2013
I find it hard to believe that we are already at the end of third quarter. This year is flying by. Friday is a teacher grading day and the students have the day off. I hope they enjoy their day.
Tuesday evening Soleng Tom's student council is sponsoring an activity at Skate Country from 6:00 to 8:00 - it is usually very fun. Perhaps you can fit skating into your busy schedule.
Wow! We had excellent book reports presented! Many of the kids are going far beyond what is required. It is exciting to watch the kids feel so pleased with their report as they present to the class.
Approximately half the class did not get an opportunity to present their book report yet. I hope to be able to finish the presentations on Monday.
We will not have spelling or vocabulary words this week due to our short schedule. Our time will be invested into finishing the book report presentations, working on our character sketch, and enriching our knowledge of figures of speech. I am going to ask for your help revising and editing the character sketch on Tuesday evening.
We are at a very important portion of our math curriculum, learning two digit times two digit multiplication. In class we have demonstrated the array, partial product and algorithm method. Every student should become very efficient with the algorithm. The array and partial product methods are intended to help the students understand why the algorithm works. To help the kids memorize their math facts we will focus on timed multiplication tests. The students have three goals to achieve. 30 facts correct in three minutes, then 50 facts in four minutes and finally 100 facts in five minutes. I am still pondering the rewards for achieving each goal. The students will be given practice sheets and I would appreciate your assistance memorizing their facts.
Last week I noticed a couple of areas that need to be improved. The first is excessive talking when the student should be listening or working and the second is not having homework completed and at school. Please discuss talking and homework with your son or daughter to determine how they are doing in those areas.
May I take this opportunity to thank all the parents and extended family for your support. It makes a HUGE difference if the child has supportive parents to encourage them in education. I absolutely love working at Soleng Tom because of the parent support.
Grow, Reach, Succeed,
Mrs. Figueroa

Teacher's note March 4, 2013
Please read the Family Life letter that will be in today's Dragon Folder. It contains information that you will probably want to know. Then decide whether or not you want your child to participate in the one gender separated lesson and return the permission form to me. The Family Life curriculum book will be in the front office for you to review if you desire.
Our fiction book reports are due this week! We have already had two students complete their report and presentation. I sincerely hope your son or daughter has been reading and now just has to decide what type of book report they would like to produce. I always look forward to the book report presentations.
We have started writing our character sketch. Each child will be writing about themselves and so far should have their looks and personality paragraphs completed. We just started describing our hobbies. The kids seem very motivated to write so far.
Monday the students will calculate the volume of an object. Then we will skip to unit 8 to cover two digit times two digit numbers and division. Students should know the array, partial product and algorithm strategy by the end of the week. This would be a great time to review multiplication facts.
Our seeds have sprouted! The kids have seen first hand the three parts of a seed that include a seed coat, embryo and cotyledon. The beans sprouts will be used to set up hydroponics and grown further. The goal is to take the bean seed through the life cycle until it produces a new bean seed.
Grow, Reach & Succeed!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Figueroa
