Teacher's Note October 26, 2015
I think we have a terrific week of learning and fun activities planned! I hope you already have the Fall Festival on your calendar for Saturday from 11:00 to 2:00. Last year it was a fantastic event! I am positive it will be super fun again this year and I know our excellent PTSA has been working hard on the special event! The teachers had out candy at the beginning and there will be enjoyable activities to do the entire time. I hope to see you on Saturday.
I have three main goals planned for language arts this week. First, finish our Greek God or Goddess report. Second, practice writing summaries - we need more practice determining the main idea and writing supportive details. Finally, we will start studying figures of speech and work on understanding idioms. The kids seem very excited and engaged into their report. The report is due on Friday. The poster will be 12 by 18 inches or smaller. I will give the students the paper for the poster. The students will present their report and then hang it up in the hall for all to enjoy!
In the beginning of the week we will study factors and multiples in math. Then we learn division into the hundreds and thousands. It is very important we learn those multiplication facts as we do more advanced math problems. I want the students to continue to complete the Multiplication Memorization Chart and memorize the facts that will be tested on Friday. I hope you received the letter that was sent home that explained the Multiplication Sundae project the entire fourth grade is doing. Last week we took our ones and twos timed test. The kids have two minutes to answer 50 facts on that factor. Students may retake the test Wednesday at lunch if they did not get all the facts correct the first time.
We are going to complete a couple of the final lessons in The Changing Earth - we need to learn about changes people make to the Earth. Then we will start our Electricity unit. I predict the kids will absolutely love studying electricity.

Teacher's Note October 19, 2015
Welcome back to the second quarter of this school year and I hope your Fall Break was very pleasant. I am looking forward to second quarter because we have great learning opportunities planned and I feel like I know my students better now.
Congratulations to Trevor and Claire for winning the election to represent our class in student council. We feel very confident they will do an excellent job!
The Dragon Folders and the first quarter progress reports will be handed out on Tuesday. Please sign the back of the progress report envelope and return it on Wednesday morning. You can either write a note or email me if you would like to discuss the progress report. I will respond back to you as soon as possible.
We will read "The Nights of the Pufflings" from our anthology - it is one of my favorite selections of the whole year. After Tuesday, ask the kids to tell you about it. The skill that we will work on is summarizing text. The kids should write their own words to describe the most important details, keep the same sequence and not change the meaning. This selection works perfectly for writing summaries.
The kids will continue to work on researching their Greek God or Goddess. We are researching in class with books, encyclopedias and the computer. Soon the students will start selecting pictures that they want included on their poster. Our computer lab time is Friday afternoon. Some of the students may finish Friday and other students will need more time next week.
After a quick review of the multiplication and division algorithm, we will continue to move forward improving our division skills. Division is far easier if we know our multiplication facts. The students will be working on memorizing their multiplication facts. Please quiz the students on their multiplication facts and sign the paper if you feel they honestly have those facts memorized. The Multiplication Memorization chart should be kept in their red folder until it is complete. I will give the student a random multiplication quiz when they hand me a completed Multiplication Memorization chart. Students may go ahead of the homework schedule or take more time if needed - let's just memorize those facts!

Teacher's note October 5, 2015
We have reached the final week of the first quarter - it went very fast! Friday will be a teacher grading day and so the kids may start their Fall Break. Second quarter begins on October 19th.
Due to the short week, we will not have spelling or vocabulary words.
This week the plan is to work on the skill of paraphrasing and not plagiarizing. Then we will start researching a Greek god or goddess. The kids will be asked to produce a poster with a picture and a paragraph or two about their chosen god or goddess. The students will have a couple of weeks to work on this project. We will be using the computers at school for the final copy. The students will orally present their final project to the class.
Last week I was zipping along with the math lessons and then realized there was a mid module review. I did change the lesson plans and homework last week to include the review. The review was extremely informative. We need to spend more time on multi step multiplication story problems. We talked about labeling what the different numbers mean to help us keep each step organized. Often pictures or tape diagrams are useful to help us visual what the story problem is asking us to solve. Some students successfully completed the mid module review, others needed more time and still others were very frustrated. I decided after an hour and fifteen minutes that I had enough information - we need more practice with multi step multiplication story problems. We will do daily application problems to help us develop problem solving skills. The mid module review will be in the Dragon Folder so you can see how your son or daughter performed.
Now we are on division! We started with an area and array model to solve division problems. This week we will use place value and disks to help us visualize what is happening and use the standard algorithm. I really want the students to know and understand why the algorithm works.
I am hoping to squeeze in as much science as possible this week. We definitely want to conduct the stream studies investigation and learn about the movement of Earth's plates.
I do hope this week is full of learning opportunities and the kids enjoy their Fall Break.
