I sincerely hope that everyone had an enjoyable vacation and an opportunity to relax.
Thank you to those who helped provide the delicious staff appreciation luncheon on December 14th. The potato bar, salads and desserts were fantastic - not to mention the decorated teacher's lounge. Also thank you for the group gift from the class. I received a generous gift card and beautiful candle holder with candle. Soleng Tom is a very supportive and generous work site. My sincere thanks for all you do for our school and myself.
We are now entering second semester of 4th grade! Second semester is always very exciting and fast paced. This week the kids can sign up to try out for the school talent show. Try outs will begin next week. The school spell-a-thon begins this month and our annual Night of the Museum will be on Tuesday, January 31. Many students will be anxious for track to begin in February. I just listed a few things that are in our near future as evidence that second semester should be very exciting.
Third quarter the kids get to write personal narratives. Most students enjoy creating stories more than writing informational text or persuasive writing. We will begin our study of personal narratives by focusing on the use of quotations and changing paragraphs as we read Chocolate Fever. Then the students will plan and write a story about having too much of a good thing. This is one of my favorite writing projects of the year.
Our next book report will be a biography. The kids will be encouraged to select their book and get started reading as soon as possible.
The current math unit is addition and subtraction strategies, building number sense to one thousand and then to ten thousand. The students will be learning how to use an open numberline to add or subtract. A variety of strategies will be modeled and the kids are expected to master at least two addition and subtraction methods with one being the standard algorithm.
During social studies the vast majority of our time will be spent studying Arizona and some time learning about the civil rights movement.
We will continue studying The Changing Earth in science. The investigations Downhill Rollers and The Great Earth Mover will be conducted this week using models.
I believe we have both exciting learning opportunities and school activities ahead that will make third quarter very interesting!
