Teacher's note January 23, 2012

We are set for another exciting week of learning and activities!  Tuesday the Spell-a-thon pep assembly will get the students pumped up.  Wednesday we have club/group pictures.  Thursday a docent from the Tucson Museum of Art will lead us through a clay lesson.  Students will be asked to  wear casual clothes on Thursday, we may get a bit dirty.  Then on Friday we have the school talent show!  We are definitely excited to watch the kids perform.

Please save the evening of January 31 for Soleng Tom's annual Night at the Museum.  It is an opportunity to showcase art, math, language arts, science, technology and social studies that the students have completed so far this year.  I invite you to spend a portion of your evening with us.

You will notice that we only have 15 spelling words this week.  They are the first 15 words on our Spell-a-thon list.  Friday morning we will take a test on just those words.  Let's make spelling a priority this week and concentrate on learning those words.  We want to do well for the Spell-a-thon and possibly win a pizza party if our class has the highest percentage correct in 4th grade.  Next week we will study words 16 - 30.

Most of our students are completing the rough draft of their too much of a good thing story.  I appreciate your help editing.  We are especially working on when to start a new paragraph and using quotation marks correctly.  I am going to request the students write the final copy in cursive.

Subtraction strategies will be our math focus this week.  The open numberline, breaking apart one number, subtracting money and the subtraction algorithm will be what our class will be practicing.  I am planning to give the unit 5 math test on Friday or next Monday as observe how the students master subtraction.

That is probably enough informaton for now.

Take care,
Mrs. Figueroa
