I hope your vacation was very pleasant - mine was! It seemed to go way too fast! Welcome back to the second semester of the school year and the exciting activities that are awaiting. Thank you again for the very generous Christmas and birthday gifts.
In Monday's Dragon Folder will be the permission form for our field trip to Saguaro National Park East on January 20th. I love this field trip because the kids are involved in a variety of activities and the scenery is beautiful. We will need parent drivers to provide the transportation. Our plan is to learn about the desert communities, eat lunch, take a short hike and then return to Soleng Tom. Thank you for returning the paperwork as soon as possible.
Mrs. Saavedra's mother has been diagnosed with a condition that does not have a cure, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Being a very loving and devoted daughter, Mrs. Saavedra made the decision to provide the care that her mother will need. We will certainly miss Mrs. Saavedra and admire her choice to care for her mother. We send our love and best wishes to her family. Mr. Dotson is pondering possibilities about the teacher's aide position and I will try to keep you informed as we know more.
All of us will be starting new math units this quarter. Third grade will study measurement, perimeter and area. We will be using both the standard and metric systems to measure. The kids are welcome to practice measuring items at home. Fourth grade starts a fraction unit with halves, fourths and eighths. The investigations are organized so we can compare the relationships of the fractions. We will also study thirds and sixths and fractions of a set.
The kids will have an opportunity to describe their holiday vacation in a writing project this week. The assignment will include an introductory paragraph, three paragraphs describing different events during the holiday and a conclusion. Wednesday night I will ask your help editing the paragraphs.
Fourth grade will begin to focus on Arizona history. The students will select a historical figure from Arizona to research. The research will be conducted in class using the computer, encyclopedia and/or Arizona text book. I expect the project to take us two or three weeks to complete. Students will take notes, write notes into organized paragraphs and produce the final copy on the computer.
Once again, welcome back to the second half of the school year. I look forward to working and learning with your children.
Take care,
Mrs. Figueroa
