Thank you for the excellence response to provide transportation to Saguaro National Park on Tuesday, January 20th. We do have enough drivers for this field trip. I will send home paperwork on Monday to the parents that volunteered to drive. I'd appreciate your assistance returning the forms and a copy of your driver's license and proof of insurance. I believe all of us will really enjoy this field trip.
Please notice that next Monday will be Martin Luther King Day and no school. This week we will read about Dr. King's life, the Civil Rights Movement and watch the Ruby Bridges movie on Friday. No doubt our class will discuss the need to treat everyone with respect.
Our Dragon Folder will be stuffed with information this week. Please notice the Spell-a-thon packet and place it in a safe location. I would like to encourage every student to do their best learning the spelling words and finding sponsors. Also in the Dragon Folder, the fourth graders will have the track permission forms. At Soleng Tom only fourth and fifth graders are invited to participate in track. Students must have parent permission to try out for the track team. Please return the form promptly if your son or daughter wants to do track.
During language arts we will focus on using and understanding sequence words. The students will be asked to include sequence words in their paragraph that will be written Wednesday night. Please review the paragraph to make sure your child is using sequence words correctly.
This will be a very important week in math for both the third and fourth graders. Third grade will learn how to determine area of a shape and use many geometry terms such as congruent, flip, slide, and rotation. The goal is to become experts at determining perimeter and area of a shape.
Fourth graders will be making fractions cards to compare and order the fractions. They will know the difference between proper, improper and mixed fractions by the end of the week. The kids will use fraction benchmarks to order fractions.
We have three special activities this week. First, a kindness assembly on Monday. Then a Saguaro National Park presentation on Tuesday and our Strive for Excellence Assembly Wednesday morning.
As you can see, we have many lessons and activities to make this an exciting week!
Take care,
Mrs. Figueroa
